2012 RT I smell gas
I’ve put about 500 miles on this Rt. I smell gas when I first fill up to when it registers about a half tank. When the gas gauge triggers the low fuel warning lamp it take about 3 1/2 gallons to fill up. So the gas smell is when the tank is really full. Any thoughts?

Agreed. Anytime is a VERY GOOD time for a Canister-Ectomy on the 2008-2012 Spyders. Easy, cheap and might keep you from burning down...

Hey Lou, and welcome. The key to reducing gas smell is reducing the under body temperature, which reduces the fuel tank temperature, and getting rid of that charcoal canister that is probably saturated by now. As others have mentioned, do a Google/Forum search for the term canisterectomy. You'll see all about it. A perfect rainy day project, it will be safer, and it will allow better venting of your fuel tank which will allow you to fill it more fully. There could be just a hint of a smell on really hot days, but it lasts only briefly.
Also, don’t put the pump nozzle all the way into the tank. Hold it slightly past the opening in the top of the tank. Otherwise, it clicks off too soon. 4.5 gallons from the low light to full is a typical number.
Second, if your RT does not have them installed, do another search for the RT vent kit / RT scoop kit. If you have things that look like air scoops installed on the body panel under your mirrors, instead of the standard wind deflectors, then you already have them. If not, that kit, which came from BRP, will increase under body airflow and keep things much cooler - including the rider's package - which is always a plus.
Once you determine what you already have on your RT and which direction you want to go, if you need more info don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks everyone for your help. Looks like a Canister-Ectomy is on the surgery list.

Just by passed my evap yesterday. Will fill and ride today. Only question I have is: do you HAVE to put a gas filter on the vent line?

IMO, no. It's a nice touch and I did when I did it on my old bike, but I personally don't consider it a necessity.

The answer is no. You don't have to. I did it because it keeps anything from getting into the line (probably not necessary). And since I think I may have been one of the 1st to do this, I wanted to monitor for any raw gasoline getting through the system. The clear fuel filter allowed me to do this.
