It's not uncommon, Mike. Many people join to look/watch/learn, and then only contribute rarely; which is quite acceptable & sorta supported & shown by the membership numbers that you found. But considering there's probably not quite yet 200,000 Spyder/Rykers out there in the whole world, we really aren't doing too badly in attracting our share of them!
If you want to see some more numbers, look on the Forum's front/index page (the one that lists all the Forum's sections/sub-forums & not the Home page ) down the bottom of that there's a section called 'What's Going On?' In that, about 5 headings down, below the 'Today's Birthdays' listing (Happy Birthday Startingnow! ) you should be able to see 'Can-Am Spyder & Ryker Three Wheel Motorcycles Statistics' - and in that, you'll see that while we have almost 24,000 members listed, there's only 8,914 or so that are 'active'.... and that percentage of 'actives' is pretty much par for the course & this type of Forum.
Yeah, I know that there are some Forum's out there that might show (boast? ) that they have 100's of thousands of members, but often, when you really start digging into their membership lists, it doesn't take too much to realise they've actually only got a few thousand members who are truly active & have posted in recent months. We did get up over 60,000 members a while back, but that was only because the 'ongoing clean-up' of all the spammers & hackers & dodgy registrations that are always trying it on hadn't been purged for a while due to other pressing & understandable priorities; but over the last couple of years there's been a concerted effort to weed out all those dodgy registrations & our membership list is a much better reflection of reality now. It is a bit of an effort to keep it like that tho, cos while we want to get rid of the dodgy records, we don't really want to dump any legit members who just haven't posted in a while. So (please don't hold me to the time-frames cos it's all based on arbitrary dates not periods) if you don't post within 6 months you'll be dropped out of the active number count; if you haven't posted within the last 3 years your account will be re-classified within the 'members' listing; and if you still don't log-in/post for more than 5 years your registration will be archived....
BTW, many of those Forums that boast membership lists of over 100,000 members often actually have well over 90,000 dodgy &/or spurious 'members' that are simply dummy accounts that have been created by spambots &/or other dodgy types so that they can either start posting crap straight away, or be held in reserve for later so they can be 'activated' en masse at a moment's notice & then go on to cause havoc at will - and if &/or when that happens, they basically just start posting & if left un-checked, can swamp the Platform & any Admin/Mods with heaps of garbage posts, porn, dodgy adverts, malware, and all sorts of other stuff you really don't want, pushing the legit members right off the Forum & eventually destroying it!! This DOES & HAS happened, so we (the Mod/Admin Team) put a LOT of effort into trying to keep those types of registrations out, and they rarely get thru to the posting stage here.... altho if you were very quick & happened to be looking at the right spot at exactly the right time, you may have seen a post or two & a thread that disappeared very quickly, cos we did get one earlier today.... gone now tho!

I am a member on a couple other forums. One is garage and tool related. They claim almost 233,000 members, 25,000 of them are "active". Just this last week, I responded to one poster and noticed that this was his second post. His join date was July, 2012.
The other forum is motorcycle-related. 2764 members, 580 are "active". I have been a member there for over 15 years. Many of the names that were active when I started are still there and active. We have regional get-togethers much like Spyder Lovers, but no larger, organized rallies. Usually just a riding weekend together. We have members all around the world, and southwest oHIo seems to be a hotspot, I have over 25 members within about 50 miles of me.
As far as number of posts, 900 of those 2764 members have 11 or more posts. Only 430 members have 101 or more posts. 179 member have 1000 or more posts. At the other end of the scale, there are 27 members with over 10,000 posts, the one with the most has over 42,000. Yeah, he's retired. When he's not riding (he lives in Flori-duh), he's posting on the forum.
Yeah, Mike, the numbers on SL seem to be somewhat typical.

What your finding is typical. It has been this way for the 11 years I have been around. Another way to view the forum is to go by number of posts. It will quickly separate the "active" members from the "inactive" ones. Go to the members page and click on "posts" at the top. It will line em up.

I finally caved and joined social media. Maybe I’m getting old, or just don’t like change, but for me the forum seems to be easier to follow.

Over the years I have joined numerous forums to learn and share knowledge. Many times I have shared my knowledge or opinions and sometimes get taken out of context and misconstrued by others. This has not happened here on spyderlovers to me, but I have followed some threads where sarcasm and bickering take over the conversation. I only post if I feel I'm adding something useful to the thread.

I joined a facebook group for the area I'm in. But I like forums better than social largely cause you can look old posts that hold information your searching for. Would love to see a Spyder Discord server go up but that's a whole nother ball of wax..

I reluctantly sold my spyder a little over a year ago. But, I still check in here almost every day and post once in a while too. After a few years on the forum it feels like "family". There are just too many good people with good information here for me to let go..... Jim

I think its normal. I am on several forums and feel like its safe to say that "most" members log on once in a blue moon to lurk. And many don't feel confident enough to get involved in conversations or try to answer questions. Some of us aren't afraid to spark up a debate, and sometimes debates can run up the post numbers...LOL

As an example Mike, I joined the forum in Feb 2012. I didnt have a Spyder until June 2015. I just lurked until then . I joined a couple of other trike and Spyder groups, but either never or seldom posted anything there, and don't even remember which ones they were. I may be on their member lists, but I'm not really there. Not a good fit for me I guess. This one seems to be.

Being a new Spyder owner, capable mechanic, and a hands-on guy, I need to do a knowledge dump to learn all I can about my ride. I've been stopping by this forum every day since my purchase to discover all the ways to spend my money & time on the RT. Maybe in a year or so I'll run out of money or interest and cut back but for now I'm a sponge for farkling ideas and willing to share whatever knowledge I have to anyone interested.
