Default Spyders in Europe - any tips about renting one there, or shipping mine fm the States?

My buddy and I will be motorcycle touring in Europe in May or June 2021.

Would love any tips about renting a Spyder there, or shipping mine over from the states.

Any and all info/advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Pablo Miller

I recommend not shipping you ride to Europe. If you should have a crash, in many countries, the bike can not leave until it's repaired and inspected. That's reason enough for me to rent one there. It's best to pre-arrange the rental from the states as it can be cheaper and your bike will be reserved.
Where in Europe do you pan to go? You won't be riding the Alps in May-June. The French Riviera is nice except for the poverty. It's so prevalent that girls can only afford half a swim suit.

So that’s the reason....I’ve often wondered about that!

But do they wear the right half, or the left half? Or do 2 girls shop together and one take the left half and the other the right?

All good questions. I'll pop over there and research the problem. It's something I'd really like to get into.

They are not shy, quite the opposite.
I'm on the Moscow Russia Spyder Club FB page. You would not believe the size of that club - they have their own clubhouse. They posted a photo of a Spyder dealership, a huge, multi story glass building and they sell and service only Spyders. The members are younger than the average US Spyder owner, by far. There is also a Spyder rental agency there. I hope to go there, these guys have a great time.

.. if we would visit America, we would take ONE Spyder RT and ride 2up with all the luggage..

if you plan to ride here in the Alps or in Italy, where the roads are smaller maybe you take two Rykers - some roads are dangerous for Motorcycles ...

to get an Idea about different targets search here:

We did a pass in Italy where the road narrowed to one lane, even though it was two way with no turnouts and it was carved into a very high up vertical cliff. There was a helluva lot of down to look at, if I dared and there was no guard rail or even a curb - just the road and nothing. Obviously I lived to tell about it, but at the time, I was having my doubts. I had to launder my undies that night.

If you're really serious about the trip be sure to get good insurance cover which can cover financial losses. Much of Europe is in or close to lockdown, some countries have a curfew and Spain has declared a state of emergency. You could easily be in a position to have to cancel your trip.

I am also on a fourm for old Suzuki motorcycles. One of our members from Australia was planning a 10-week holiday to the US. He did some research and found that his bike would have to be shipped ahead of time, then spend 6-8 weeks in quarrantine before he could claim it. Add in the 10-week holiday, then another 6-8 weeks of quarrantine when he shipped it back, he did not think that was a good idea. We'll not mention that just shipping the bike was about $2000 each way.

What he did, instead, was to arrange purchase of a similar bike here, and another onen of our members stored it for him for the next couple of years, so he could come back and ride again. After three trips here, he ended up selling the bike for nearly what he paid for it.

Depending on how long you plan on staying, you might look into purchasing a used Spyder, then selling it when you leave. Not sure how licensing and insurance would work, but it might be worth looking into.

    Interesting Steve W., thank you.
Depending on the cost and availability of rentals, I might just do the same. My daughter lives in Amsterdam, so that might work out well.

Your location shows as Mexico, so the first thing I would do is check to make sure your drivers license is going to be valid/accepted in the countries you guys plan to visit. I found the following information on Google:

"International Driving Permits are Required* in the following countries for US Licensed Drivers: Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Spain. *IDP enforcement may vary based upon car rental supplier as well as renting country."

I don't know what the requirements are for citizens of Mexico, but you might want to look into that......

Thanks Greg, I already have one. Seems almost some kind of scam, since there's no test or anything required, just a fee!

Thanks Fearlelss, that's makes sense and is good advice.

Do you know of any online places to look for used? All I've found are dealers.
