The original prototype for the Can Am Spyder was a converted snowmobile. That was sometime in the 1990's or early 2000's.

A three wheel machine is not practical for real off-roading, meaning rocky mountain trails, crossing fallen trees, fording muddy creeks, etc. For those cases you need a good four wheel drive ATV or UTV. A single powered wheel in the rear without front wheel drive won't even begin to cut the mustard when the going gets rough.
