    Default Another windshield question

So I just got back from a 3 day trip of 1000 miles. It was very hot as all my trip seem to be and I think maybe its time to do something about the lack of airflow when on the highway with the shield up.Its a stock shield and its a perfect height for me,Im 6,2 and can see over or thru if I like.On the highway its got to be up to keep the buffeting down although there is still enuf to be bothersome to both of us but not to bad. When its up it gets hot.Now I do have the Hopnel 3 bag dash set so that kinda blocks some airflow from the vents at the base of shield but I dont feel much from there anyway.Does a vent add enuf flow that it would make a significant difference and would that increase the buffeting or actually smooth it out some?Does rain come thru if its closed?Does it hold its position or do the louvers rattle around?Where can I get a vent that I can install myself? How bout the F4 shield, they say you can get it slightly wider than stock with vent already in,would that help with the buffeting or just drag down my MPG?

I would check on Ebay. I had this shield on my 2014 RT. It was 3-4" shorter and 4" wider than stock. It also had the vent inside of it. In the down position it worked great for allowing me to see over the shield and still allow me to get some air. In the up position, it kept me dry when getting caught in the rain. The Vent was good for allowing air flow, and the additional 4" of width kept the wind off my shoulders. I am also 6'-2". Sometimes it pays to just give ebay a try. I think I paid around $250 for it.

F4 has a demo shield that is a Sport Windshield Replacement for Spyder RT, 2" shorter than stock, 2.5" wider per side, with adjustable vent and tinted. This is #73 in our clearance section and it is $250.00. Normally $395. Call Don at 941-347-7496 if you are interested

That would be #37, not #73.

I put a Honda Goldwing vent in my 2014 RT-S. I think it did some good but never tested it that throughly. The Spyder’s curve was slightly more so it wasn’t easy to operate but would with a little pressure. I didn’t get any rain even when open. The vent’s cost is only about $35. I put it in upside down the first time so had to buy a used one for another $75. I used it for about 25,000 miles.

Kind of expensive. Often when folks were removing them to install the scoops, the were around $60, and still show up for sale.

If the OP wants a vented windscreen, that’s neat too. But from having the side vents on our Spyder, I know they do work.

This sounds like a good deal. It also sounds just like the one that I got off ebay and installed on my RT. It worked great. I used to have a wide and tall one for the winter and a cut down stock one for the summer. This one worked for all seasons without changing it.

I have both the windshield vent and the CanAm adjustable side vents. Along with a mesh jacket w/cooling vest and a helmet that "breathes" well---- I'm just fine in the Nevada desert. I must add though------- staying well hydrated is really important in these high temps at speed.

Okay,I did look at #37 and also #11 which was a clear 25" shield with vent, but my thing with all these shields is that they are 4" wider than stock and they seem to carry that extra width higher up.Its like the Factory shield is shaped like a triangle and the F4,s are more squareish.I like the stock style a little better but my research is telling me that the extra width creates a wider still air cocoon which extends all the way back to the passenger.Am I correct in thinking that with the vent open that the still air cocoon will also extend upwards over my helmet and possibly my wifes also. And would the vent help get rid of all that heat coming up from the glovebox area? And these side wings are you talking about the ones BRP sells that swivel around on a pivot ball or some sort of Baker air wing type?Sorry for all these questions.

I would avoid going wider. I have an F4 tall and wide with vent and Baker Air Wings on my RTS. The wider windshield does inhibit air flow from coming inward and so I lose some of the benefit of the Air Wings. I've even considered sending the F4 back to them and have it cut down to stock width. On the other hand the wider windshield is a great benefit when riding in cold weather! The BRP adjustable deflectors are good.

So I would say get the stock width and height F4 windshield, the BRP adjustable deflectors, and the Baker Air Wings, both the lower set and the upper set.

I have another question and I am hoping someone here can help me out. I had a 2011 RT with the unvented windshield. I just traded it in for a 2020 RT LTD. (Looove it!) Except... there is HUGE amount of windnoise. Way more so than the 2011. I have figured it out (I think). The 2011 had an unvented windshield and the stock 2020 has two holes in it to let air through. It roars so loud at road speeds that I can't hear the radio and have to scream at the passengers to be heard. I am thinking about replacing the windshield on the 2020 just to reduce this road noise. The stock shield provides me with plenty of protection as far as I am concerned. I do notice that a stiff wind or passing truck blows the bike to the side a bit, but that happened on the 2011 as well.

I think I might like a slightly taller and/or wider shield for some additional protection (I ride all year long) but that is nowhere near as critical as the wind noise problem. I do NOT want a sport windshield - too short. I have looked at CalSci, BRP, HotSpyder, Lamonster, and eBay.
    Thoughts on wind noise?
    Thoughts on closable vents?
Suggestions for a solid windshield for the 2020 RT?

Check out F4 Customs. Their shields are almost impossible to scratch. I can't comment on wind noise as I've never paid attention to that aspect of the windshield. But the vent they use is good. It's the same one used on Goldwings. As for width I would say pass on it if you ride a lot in really hot weather. I have trouble getting good wind flow over me on hot rides even using the Baker Air Wings. The tall part will push more air over you, not on you. I ride with my tall shield in full up position all the time. Hurts gas mileage but doesn't hurt me!

Maybe before committing any $$ to a fix that you think might address your concerns, I reckon it'd probably be a good idea to just tape over the two holes in the 2020 RT windshield, seal them off, and see what that does to the noise you are concerned about.... Only don't forget to also check on what it does to the turbulence & buffetting both you and any pillion might feel in normal riding and in a stiff wind/passing a truck!

Ps: my Uclear Intercom works really well for talking to my pillion passenger; voice clarity & noise reduction is phenomenal, even without the optional boom mic, and if you want, it can also connect via bluetooth to your GPS &/or phone.... Plus, it'll link to other 'intercom equipped' riders too, so that you can chat with your passenger &/or those travelling with you on their own machines as you ryde along, at your discretion of course!

The tape thing is something I have been thinking about. I just couldn't figure out a way to do it that wasn't "jakey" looking. But you're right, I should try that before spending some serious cash that may, or may not, fix the problem. I might try some blue painter's tape so it comes off easier. I thought about using cardboard covers and taping them in place. Just need it for a day or so. Thanks.

Don't use cardboard, or any other 'non plastic' type material - it will scratch if it moves at all on the screen, and it's really hard to stop it moving completely!! Just use Black Duct Tape, but NOT Cloth Tape or paper tape of any kind!! Duct tape is the same basic type of material as the screen; it's very sticky so that once it's on it won't move until you lift an edge & peel it off; and it's strong enough that once you get moving, it won't just 'blow thru' the holes, unlike blue painter's tape or masking tape. Use black tape so that once it's on, it'll look like it's part of the Spyder's 'normal' paintwork design - it should blend in well with your Spyder's red & black livery.

Stretch the black duct tape tight over the (clean) front of the screen in over-lapping horizontal strips starting above the holes & working down to the bottom of the screen, cos working 'up' instead of down will mean you leave an exposed lower edge of tape on the 'lee shore', ie, facing into the wind, & it can lift once you start moving (Do you really hafta ask me how I know this?? ) Working down means the exposed edge is on the upper & sheltered side while the lower/leading edge is covered, and the wind of your movement (forwards) helps hold the over-lapping joins & edges down instead of lifting. Over-lap by about 1/3rd of the width of the tape, and once you've got the horizontal strips fully covering the holes with at least one full width strip of tape across the screen above the holes, then if you like you can even use shorter/longer additional strips to curve & shape the top edge of the tape line so it conforms to the curve of the dash behind the screen and that from any distance away the tape looks like it was always meant to be there. There's lotsa things you can do with stretchy placcy duct tape on a clean polycarbonate or plexiglass screen!

    Over to you!

I would be very cautious of using Duct Tape on a plastic item and leaving it on. A friends aircraft I am helping him with, previous owner used duct tape to hold a for sale sign in place on the side window.

As of yet, no amount of denatured alcohol and elbow grease is removing the dried adhesive residue. Sadly, this is an interior window so polishing with a buffer will be a big cleanup of the interior.

You should only use the duct tape thing as a relatively short term test - ANY adhesive material left on your screen (or tupperware) for too long will present problems for cleaning off once you get around to removing it, but proper Duct tape generally works better and longer than anything else, and even after a month or so it usually takes most of its adhesive with it on removal!

That said, the adhesive on 'true' Duct tape shouldn't ever dry out while the tape is still in place - it only does that once the tape is removed & any resudue isn't cleaned off straight away, and even then it does generally still take a week or so to lose its 'stickiness' & start turning to congealed cement!! I use duct tape A LOT on vehicles with all sorts of finishes, sometimes for as long as a few weeks or even a month or so, and I've NEVER had any issues with it after the fact because I clean all the adhesive residue off virtually immediately after I remove the tape. If it's safe to do so on the surface the tape has been on, I might use a gentle solvent, but that's pretty rare - usually hot soapy water & a bit (orright, maybe it's really 'a lot' ) of elbow grease is all it takes to sort it. If the sticky residue starts 'pilling' into little sticky balls on the surface during the cleaning process, then another piece of tape wrapped 'sticky side out' around my fingers generally allows me to pick off the pills & most of the other residue before washing again to do the final clean up.

Yes, but are you putting duct tape on a transparent windscreen or on a painted surface? Smooth painted surface typically release and clean well. Transparent plastic require another level of care to prevent scratching that ruins visibility, and for some reason, most tapes stick very well to bare acrylic plastic.

I have no suggestion regarding what to use, so I guess do as Peter stated.

I've been putting it on both for years, on just about every type of (clean) paint, glass, screen, or finish that's ever been used on a motor vehicle, even on my Spyder, both on the tupperware and the OE windscreen, where it's sometimes stayed for 3-4 weeks at a time & maybe a few thousand miles - in all sorts of weather too, including riding thru dust storms, miles of mud, days of hot baking sun, freezing snow/sleet, &/or pouring rain. The OE windscreen is actually better at releasing the non-cloth type polyethelene Duct Tape than the tupperware is, and with sufficient hot soapy water & a frequently rinsed clean micro-fibre cloth, any residual sticky comes off completely & without leaving any marks - if you have to rub hard as opposed to 'lots', then you're doing it wrong!!

You've gotta be a little more careful with removing duct tape from the tupperware; if there's any dirt, chips, or imperfections in the 'soft' paint that's used on the tupperware (& many other vehicles these days too!) before you stick the Duct Tape onto it and then you leave it for a couple of weeks, when it comes time to pull the tape off you hafta do it very slowly and carefully.... cos doing that too quickly &/or without due care can pull up more of the paint on the edges of the chips &/or imperfections. But the OE windscreen, never an issue with stretching & sticking the tape on; never an issue with peeling it off, and easier residue cleaning too!

I cut out pieces of cardboard just slightly larger than the holes. I used electrical tape (only on the windshield). Took it for a test ride and it is definitely the holes that causing all the wind noise. I rode for about 15 minutes at 70mph and then took the cardboard off and rode the same way back. Big difference. Neither the cardboard or tape left any residue or marks on the windshield. It shows me I may have to invest in a third party windshield.

    Thoughts on Slingmods F4 windshield?

Tinted or not? Vented or not? My only concern over vented is that the vents may generate wind noise
