    Default Tracking App??

    Hello Fellow Riders,

I was curious if there is an app that could be used in real-time to track group riders? For example let’s say the meetup spot is point A. By looking at the app you can see all the invited group riders position as they approach point A. Furthermore, the app could be used if riders were to get off course or separated from the pack. Or some stay behind for a longer break at lunch, one could track them to meet back up later on in the day.

I have used something similar while boating, but it was a proprietary to the club I was a part of. Unfortunately they were not to eager to share with me how it was done

Any help on this would be great.

    Thanks

If each of the riders concerned is willing to fork out for a Spot Messenger device, pay the annual subscription fee, & set them to automatically send location updates every few minutes to either a shared 'collation' device or a common email address; or send those updates to each other, this isn't really all that hard! The standard Spot Messenger, the Spot Gen 3, the Spot Gen 3 Extreme, or even one of the Spot Trackers can all do this. Just type 'Spot Messenger' into google to check that lot out.

There are probably other Tracking Devices out there that'll allow the same sort of tracking & reporting, altho I don't know of any commercially available atm that'll send updates any more often than about every 2.5 minutes...

    Cheers, & enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I will look into it. Although this on the surface seems a little extreme due to the costs involved. I’d like to think there is a simpler way that is more app based / cell phone way. I know that it can be done one to one. Just by using the on board “share my location” feature within the android or iOS maps. However that would need to be done manually each time.

I’m told Rever has a LiveRide feature that might work. But I am still doing some digging into it. Not much online about it or reviews.

There could be better/cheaper ways now, but back when & where I started doing this sorta stuff, there just weren't the apps OR the cell services to let anything but a Tracker or similar work like this. Still aren't, really!

Regardless, the Spot Messenger is a handy device, and it works even if there's no mobile service... effectively, it's a land based EPIRB that can tell emergency services where you are when you really need help. And it has those 'tracking' & 'update the family' features as well as the course tracking & recording capabilities too, so if you're out ryding on your own (or in a group) anyone you've authorised or the family back home can see where you are (if you want them to know!) Handy things, really! Saved more than one life!

Check out the REVER app. It’s a route planning tool that also tracks your friends you are linked to.

Doesn’t seem to have a limit to the number of friends being tracked as long as you link them.

You could also use Bubbler GPS and Spotwalla as well. It's the tracker we use for Iron Butt Rides

You might look at the Life360 app. I have used it for group rides in the past. Came in handy when one of our riders decided to go his own route to a destination and got separated from the group. Not sure it meets all of your criteria, but might be worth a look. It does depend on cell phone coverage though, so if you lose your signal, you're out of luck.

I recently dumped my less than useful Spot in favor of a Garmin with far more features at the same price. If you are considering a satellite option, please look at the Garmin options and the reviews before getting a Spot device of any kind.

I've never used Rever for groups, but it is a very good (and constantly improving) app for ride planning, and the cost is low.

Waze has a friends setting where you can see where they're at So if all have the destination plugged you you can see when they are arriving .
Best is it tells you where the po pos are hiding along your route .
