    Default Rear brakes

    2010 RSS

I have Ron's pads, no matter what I do I cannot get the
Piston to retract enough to fit them on. I spoke to Ron and he said I am doing everything correct. They are not screw in. I bent a C clamp trying to move them. I tried WD40, I tried tapping with a mallet but it only goes so far. I am missing by like a 1/16 inch.

Any ideas from the collective minds of SL?
    Thank you in advance.

If the piston still has room to retract and it's not flush with the caliper yet, the parking brake mechanism is the first thing that comes to mind. You're working on an RS? Pull off the lever and rotate the shaft a bit further in the disengage direction.

I am sorry that you're having so much trouble with your rear caliper. Did you turn the parking brake shaft where the arm attaches to the caliper, counter-clock wise?

Here is a video that shows this.

You may also have no alternative but to disassemble the caliper to check there is no debris behind the piston preventing it from getting "home". The down side of this is that you'll then need a overhaul kit.

It's done, thank you Snowbelt and BajaRon. It was the parking brake. Spent 2 hours fighting with it, once I knew what to do 15 minutes and done.

I am sorry. I know we discussed the parking brake over the phone. I thought you said you already did this. I should have been more detail oriented. I apologize for the added grief!

Is there an overhaul kit for these?

@Pegasus = 09 GS. ***UPDATE*** have the hex/allen bolts out. YEAH! New/current issue:: cylinder (?) PISTON is all the way "OUT" and not going "IN". do I just empty brake fluid altogether to resolve?

Sorry. I don’t get it. But....the way he installed the C clamp. Is that not working for you? As you push the piston back into the caliper, the fluid will be displaced back up into the reservoir. There's no need to empty it out of the caliper - it doesn't cause a hydraulic lock. But, if your reservoir is already very full, you'll want to suck out some fluid in order to make room for what comes back. And as above, you may need to back off the parking brake shaft in order to allow the piston to fully retract into the caliper. Turn it CCW.

the presenter of the video reminds me of Chris Farley in his heyday of snorting coke while on SNL was all.

not working for me, at the moment, unfortunately. reservoir is full, caps are off. parking brake shaft is also all the way out, CCW.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong then, and I think I recall a couple of folks experiencing your issue, too. It's a matter of a slight misalignment of the piston because it's so far out. Keep at it and you'll get it.
