Default Question regarding my father who past

I believe I told you that he past. Someone brought up that he may have some bank accounts somewhere out there. How can I find out? Also, I am making arrangements to have him buried in a Veterans cemetery. He was in the Third Armored Division in Germany.

You will need his DD214 discharge papers for the VA cemetery.

Privacy laws being what they are now finding lost money can be difficult. If you are the legally designated executor of the state you may get his bank to tell you if he had a safe deposit box and a list of accounts. If they were in a different bank your best bet is searching all his papers and the like for statements. If it has been over a year the bank has probably been required to send the money to the state. You can go to to a web site like this there are many and try to search for money held by the state If the money was out of state it is going to be hard. Be very careful of scam sites when searching for the lost money. You should not have to pay anyone to get the money. You might have to pay for help in the search. When my father died I found about $300 held by the state of Texas the requirements to get it were simply not worth the effort or paperwork required to claim it.

You best bet is to contact your state va office. You should be able to google it up. "IF" you have the DD214 burial in a VA cemetery is easy I have arranged three in the last year through the AZ Va office. Finding the money if there is any is going to hard. Near impossible if you are not the designated executor. My BIL died recently and the executor a son who refuses to do anything I advise him to do only found about 180,000. I know for fact my BIL had a million in cash 10 years a go and put most of it into multiple COD's. I took him to the bank when he did it. El son will not let me look at are through personal effects and thus has found none of it.

Rogue Hawk, you may have a county Veteran's Services office, Their job is to help folks in your position.
Our local one even keeps copies of our DD214's to help our kids etc in the event of our passing.

    Rogue,

To find money/bank accounts, check the first item here:

    https://oureverydaylife.com/bank-acc...s-6725525.html

Sometimes the IRS is your friend. Even if there was a bank account where the interest paid was below what has to be claimed, the IRS will still have a record.

Thanks! I had lost hope. My father was not rich, but I do have some funeral expenses. Just getting him out of the retirement home to the morgue cost me $600.

    Hi Rogue,

Re: Just getting him out of the retirement home to the morgue cost me $600.

My mother died last year at 95. She was on Medicaid. When she went on Medicaid we were able to get a completely pre-paid funeral for her. This included the transport from the retirement facility to the funeral home.

Perchance was your dad on Medicaid?

I really don't know. His only income was SS and the government took it back.

    Hi Rogue,

Re: His only income was SS and the government took it back.

I also learned that one; the hard way. SS is a system that pays you early in the month for that month rather than later in the month for that month.

They put my mother's last SS payment into her bank account & about 4 hrs later, took it back.
