    Default And another destroyed weekend...

I was thinking of adding this to my previous Can Am problem post, but here it is:

Since the last fix the Spyder has been OK: a few rides of 400/500 miles on 3 days: no problem! My club had a ride this weekend called the Alien ride through AZ, CA & NV. 3 days. It started well on Hwy 8 even if it seemed a little bit sluggish, using a lot more gas then usual and, while idling, the fan came more often.
    3 miles from the 1st stop : https://coyotesflyingsaucers.wordpress.com
Suddenly the temp went crazy and the red overheating light went on; I think I had a little hiccup which could be the start of seizing.
Emergency stop ... coolant on the ground, fight 10 minutes to get to the overflow tank (who had the idea of plastic rivet??). Try to open the tank, now the smell of coolant will never get off my clothes! Try to add water.... on the ground.

AAA to the rescue for the usual flat bed of shame and here we go! Using the Can Am GPS/Spyder shop finder I did find a shop in San Diego and yes they can take the bike, at least on the phone!NB: my RT is a 14...whats the way to keep these dealers accurate on the Garmin??

Arriving 2h later... empty lot ... call again “oh yes we moved we are now on Hacienda drive”, nice AAA driver takes me there: in the middle of a nice housing area... phone again: “ no we are not in SD but in Vista and we close at 6! No no-one can wait for you and no you cannot leave the bike outside...”.

Uhaul to the rescue: bunch of young *******s for who it’s easier to say no: no trailer, no ramp etc. Ended up renting a van and here is the circus part, back up the van to the flat bed, play with flat bed inclination and hop the RT is inside the van... blocked to go back by the van wheel wells and by a big strap given by AAA...the ones I bought at Uhaul are useless!!

Another 361 miles to home, with back van door open, arrived @4:00AM & delivery to a semi-local shop...who takes an hour to find 3 ramps...

At a little over 31000 miles on my RT I think this the end of it!! I was patient with my -11 and its "teething" problem, had about 25000 miles with no probs with the 14 and now it looks like "wisdom teeth" problems!

I either need a sidecar which can run at 85mph all day long, be sweet in the twisties and comfy or try a Niken or a R18 Goldwing kit...

Sorry I ran out of patience trying to download pic.

It was OK for 25000 miles and right after the end of the extended warranty, I started to have electrical problems: errors messages and limp mode. Been repaired once to only start again 3 months later with a change of VCM ($2000) did not fix anything so under warranty of this repair BRP agreed to change the harness.... still same problems... changed FOC the engine harness. No prob for 800 miles and now this!!!! So ready for something else!!

ANYTHING that is man made can break down.

Spyders are no different than any other ride, we all get a lemon now and then.

I have over 125,000 miles on various Spyders with no major problems.

Right after I bought my Spyder, I stumbled upon information about the Sturgis Trike Kit for the Gold Wing GL1800. (I still have my Honda) I MAY have gone for that instead of the Spyder. Problem is they are not known around here. I have never seen one, talked to anyone who has one or knows anything about them except from their web site. They do look interesting. Good luck..... Jim

I rode a R18 back in 2013 at a GW event in State College PA...I was ready to pull the trigger on one and BRP came out with the 1330...If you go with the R18 be sure to get the "easy steer" option...The last I heard the R18 kit was not available with Honda's DCT...If & when it is available with the DCT I would say it would be the perfect reverse trike...There are several around the central PA area, and all bullet prof...larryd

Hi Ha.... news from the Can Am... Radiator cap (somewhere under 2 acres of plastic was leaking and therefore no water pressure in the system+loss of coolant= overheating! Does that mean I am stuck with my Spyder or can I sell it "perfect, just out of a tune up"? BTW... how is this possible to find without taking 2 acres of Tupperware? How do you even check the water level EASILY on the RT (thinking of replacing the "rivet" by a Dzuz...).

    Canjhb: close to you: https://www.americanbikeandtrike.com...s-motoren.html

Larryd: I am not crazy about the Honda DST (maybe 'cause I never rode one), I was thinking, before, this dreaded weekend to sell one of my sidecar and replace it by a new one with a Honda F6B for tug and found tons of trail changing options which should be good for a R18!
Must admit I like the "tilting" TMW option too... https://www.americanbikeandtrike.com...tor-works.html

I'm somewhat familiar with that KIT …. I'm confused as to why that transmission would have anything to do with the front end conversion ….. They are not related parts !!!! ……………..jmho …. Mike

    Default Coolant cap issue

I have tried to remove mine to check the fluid …. I gave up after 15 minutes ….. there have been various Failures with the coolant tank ( itself ) and hose connections ….. Never heard that a CAP broke ….. If the cap was ever re-moved, getting it back on " correctly " would be the issue …… jmho …. Mike

    If you look there: http://sturgistrike.com/models/
It looks like any GW is covered with ABS and, me too, I do not understand why the DCT could not work?

I, too, can't understand why the DCT would have anything to do with this conversion. That aside, my Gold Wing does not have ABS (or DCT). What it does have is a little over 100K miles and my FULL confidence. I have had 3 Gold Wings over the last 25+ years and have never been stranded or unable to ride at any time by any of them. Unlike my Spyder. As I write this, it sits disabled in the garage with a stuck thermostat, waiting for the dealer to come get, and the earliest date for that is May 30th. My warranty expires on June 17th and has been needed for repairs 3 times in the last 2 years. I also need to make a decision about the future of Spyder ownership. There is a lot about the Spyder that I really, really like. Having breakdowns that take a month or longer to resolve is not one of those likes.

I have been to American Bike and Trike. They do not stock any Sturgis kit stuff. It is all individually ordered. And, again, nobody to provide feedback about the Sturgis. No way to test ride. I can't even find any internet reviews so it would be a big gamble IMHO. Oh well, life goes on and tomorrow is another day..... Jim

ALL brands have failures. On our last group trip to Spyders on the Bayou, it was the Goldwing in the group that went home on the flatbed.

Checking coolant on the RT is very simple. Remove the service panel held on by one fastner and shine a flashlight up from under the wheel well. You can see the fluid level in the bottle. Its one of the check points for every service interval.

Sorry to hear of your troubles on the road.

    Even BMW are better... https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...ycle/index.htm

    Reliablity by brand

    Brand Percent failed
    Yamaha/Star 11%
    Suzuki 12
    Honda 12
    Kawasaki 15
    Victory 17
    Harley-Davidson 26
    Triumph 29
    Ducati 33
    BMW 40
    Can-Am 42

Almost one out of 2... but still the usual excuses:"xxxxxxxxxxx miles and no probs" or "it must be a lemon..." etc etc.

On my -11(17000 miles before changed): complete dashboard, Throttle body, front pipe/sender ("but it was a "new" concept... it is normal!"
On my -14 (31000 as now): electronic problem not diagnosticed for 2 years/10000 miles), VCM, harnesses changes, and now radiator problem.

At one time it is time to stop, with the nose in it, it is not butter!!

If I had half of these problems on my Ural(s) I'll would have burned them!!

Anyone has a Yugo stickers I can put on my RT???

The DCT is only available on the NEW REDESIGNED GW...As far as I know the Sturges R18 kit is not offered for the NEW GW platform yet...I for one would not want to go back to a clutch and manual transmission after being spoiled by my SE6 RTS...larryd

Sorry ...it is not a fastener... it is a plastic rivet which you have to pry off (rivet on owner's manual)...and do not forget the twisted funnel to add coolant/water (have to carry a bottle of it too??).

    Default Push Pin Rivet...

For those having trouble removing the RIVET, take a look at this tool. It's designed to remove those rivets.

I’m sorry you went through all of that. There were three ladies from CA on their way to Spyderfest and one of them had a similar problem, we were able to show them how to fix it via a FaceTime phone call.

The plastic rivet, pull the center out of a previously used rivet and simply slip the rivet body into the hole. Do not install the rivet center, the panel will remain in place without issue.
