Default Bikes when we were kids

Remember these chopper bikes? I had one just like this. Later I had a '10 Speed', but they never had the character of the chopper. Kids loved to customize them. Big sissy bars with decals and reflectors. Metal flake banana seats glistening in the sun. You know want I mean. What did you have?

First bike was a newly repainted 2nd hand Columbia for Christmas. One speed and balloon tires. I lusted for a Schwinn Corvette. It had chrome fenders, 3 speed, and was considered a middleweight bike. It had a "rat trap" carrier/rack over the front wheel. Green Lake Cycle in Seattle was probably tired of me lurking in their showroom and drooling on the merchandise. Got the Schwinn for Christmas when I was 10. Suspect the bike shop may have bribed my parents to get me out of their hair. Had that bike until I was well into my 20s. I rode everywhere. Lots and lots of miles on that bike..... Jim

Yeah, I was disappointed when the Big Wheel came out. I was already to big for it. But I do remember the huge rumble those things made. Get a couple of kids go by and it was like an earth quake. I wonder if they still make those.

Nope, my first one looked more like this, except it was kinda rusty and came from a police auction of recovered stolen property that was never claimed.

Only one I ever owned. Never had anything else but motorcycles after that old bike. Lived way out on a dirt road and riding a bicycle was real tricky in 8 inch deep ruts through sugar sand. Learned to get on that old bike by running along side, then step on a pedal and swing up on it before I was tall enough to reach the ground. Had to get off the same way. Left some patches of skin all around the farm. Got back up and tried it again every time.

When I worked at the mine, the company gave us 3 wheel bikes with a big basket on the back to haul our tools around the chemical plant, but my supervisor took mine away from me when he saw me riding it through the plant flipped up on two wheels. I tried to explain that some of the mechanics had two wheel bikes and they was riding on two wheels, but he said I had to walk and carry my tools because I didn't have sense enough to ride a bike safely. I never had a wreck, I was just riding a 3 wheel bike on 2 wheels.

I had a sears 3 speed spider bike with a 36 inch sissy bar, slick back tire and tassels on the handle bar grips. Loved that bike. I put what seems like thousands of miles on it. Most the time with baseball or poker playing cards cloths pined to the frame and stuck through the wheel spoke for a motor noise. Those were the days. Thanks for the flash back. Happy Trails

OK, then. You know this one. The gear shiftier was in the middle with a fake wood counsel to make it look like a car. Fun times.

For anyone else., notice the gear shiftier just below the handlebars.

Had the same bike only in blue. For some reason it looked a lot bigger and cooler in the 70's! Have you seen what these go for now?
