    The side edge that points down can be trimmed. You don't need all that "height" on it in order to make it strong.

    Try and do a round cut, like an arch (similar with bridges support), following the contour of the wheel and reduce the side by half - don't go lower. That should be more than OK.
    Also do some testing on how much weight it can actually take (if the bars are thick enough, I'm sure it can hold quite a bit).

    Another idea will be try and find something similar but with a 135 degree angle, not 90 (but that might bend under the weight).
    This way the edges will flare out, allowing to go around the wheel, hopefully.
