Any ordinary LED will trip the computer and set up the "limp mode" reading.
I have the Sport rack and it took a while to install; loosened the rack, removed both rear side panels and under panel, and removed one screw on each brake light assembly. I wiggled each assembly down enough to reach in, turn each bulb socket counter-clockwise and pull the socket out. Removed each bulb, replaced with led and put everything together again. (It helped that I have small hands; otherwise the whole rack would have had to come off.)
I am planning a long trip and did not want to worry about replacing a bulb on the road. When NMN "(ESI)" has the Givi bag lights available, I will order and install those as well, and that will give me lots of brake light !!
I'm going to give them a shot too as sending in my parts, etc. just won't work. I'm also wanting to buy the GIVI bag lights from NMN - as soon as they are listed on their website.

Fire,
Why doesn't sending your lights in work? It only took a few days...was a very simple process...the lights are bright as heck and, of course, work fine...
Send on a Monday, you'll have back by Wed. or Thursday, unless you live in an extreme location.

Two questions, one easy.
1. Do these Pilot LEDs flash initially when brakes are applied and then go into steady mode?
2. Any thoughts on why they are not DOT approved? Made in China and not submitted for DOT review? Do they lose some brightness if not viewed directly from behind like some LEDs? Components don't meet DOT stds? ???. Checking local Auto Zone, Advance Auto, etc, but looks like Pep Boys may be only oulet in Michigan.

Some companies don't want to spend the BIG $$$ to get the full DOT testing done on their products to sure they meet DOT requirements.
Without the testing being done they can't be sure the products are DOT compliant and are sure they meet the grade?
So, although anybody can say their product is DOT compliant, the fines are HUGE if you say they are, and testing shows in fact they are not DOT compliant after you said they were.
It may not seem like DOT testing should be important, that is right up to the point there is an accident! Then the Lawyers all seem to think IT IS I BIG DEAL for sure.

Right now Spyder is my only form of transportation. Other vehicle was taken out by a deer. Maybe come winter time----- but I won't give up riding my Spyder for a few days very easily at all.
These pep-boys units are NOT DOT certified - says so right on the package - for off-road use only. My guess is they are cheap--- but then again what should we expect for $25 ???
I would much prefer a unit that can just plug in where the stock bulbs go, so for $25 I may give these a shot.

1. no flashing
2. i am guessing no money to get it dot certified for when it's retailed at 25 bucks led itself is working very well and these have wider dispersion than others i've seen and yes pepboys are the only ones that have them for now and they just got these in themselves.

I picked up 2 LED tail lights today from my local Lordco store. Part # is HIL-1157R. List cost is about $20.00/ea. Any Napa or auto parts store should be able to source these.
Cheers

Try this link:

Pilot Automotive LI-1157RCZ Wide Angle LED Bulb
The one Amazon review posted says they are red, come in pairs and the load circuit doesn't work on all vehicles. But, if SomeGuy says in his post above he's got 10k Spyder miles without problems, I trust him.

Be really careful with these-- the solder joints break really easy when you're twisting them in.......
Spyder #1 - 2008 GS SM5 Premier Edition #1977. RIP after 80,000 miles.
Spyder #2 - 2012 RT SM5. Traded in after 24,000 miles.
Spyder #3 - 2015 F3 SM6. Put 13,000 miles on and sold it.
Spyder #4 - 2017 F3 SM6. Too good of a deal to pass up!

FireFly is correct, it is very easy to break the solder on the head if you twist too hard. But if you're careful on the initial install, you won't ever have any problems with them (based on my experience).

just ordered a set
Hello.. I am a new spyder owner.. had the back rest installed and I am now reading that it is "hell" to change the bulbs with the Sportrack on the spyder.. So I ordered a set of these Bulbs.. I hope they are as good as everyone says.. I have also seen on here where people have shaved a section off their taillight housings that is supposed to make it easyier to change the bulbs.. I wounder if that mode works for those of us who have sport racks..
