    Default Which F3 Limited Windshield?

So if I can sell my F3S, I’m going to get a F3 Limited. I know all the add-ons I want except for the windshield. I literally tried every one on my F3S and ended up running the route 129. I could not find one tall enough that didn’t cause buffeting. I think the design of the F3T or L would be better for preventing this but want to get some opinions. I was thinking either the tall boy or a F4 with vents. I wouldn’t mind looking through it as long as I can get that calm breezy & no wind noise feeling that some people claim to get. I’m 5’10” and will have short reach bars & #4 position pegs. Thanks.

Go for a 23" f4 with the vent. Also, get the air wings.

I agree. I'm very happy with my F4 shield with the vent.

I lovemy F4 23” vented but I liked the Tall Boy until I got a custom seat that raises you up 2” and it no longer gave me the wind protection I wanted for 500+ mile days. If I stayed local or did shorter rides the Tall Boy would have been sufficient, the stock windshield was a joke, carnival freak show joke.

If you want a Tall Boy I’ll make you a good deal on one.

I might be interested in knowing what you would ask for the tall boy if the previous poster isn't interested. BTW, this is Keith, I think I got the luggage rack from you.

Still need to sell my F3S & get a Limited, but it sounds like the F4 is the way to go. Are you going to have your Limited with you next month in Tracy?

How bout your tall boy. I think shipping to East Tennessee 37601 expensive. If not sold how much. Tinted? Vent? I have a 2017 F3-SE6 Limited. Moved from a Goldwing and too much wind with the mickey mouse stock windshield. Maybe back to the wing...have not registered the bike yet.

Test drove a F3 Limited today with the tall boy. Oh boy, what a difference compared to mine. I really need to get mine sold to upgrade. How much taller is the 23” F4 compared to the tall boy? Are the vents totally close-able?

The F4 23" is 23" from the top to the bottom. The vents are adjustable and you can close them all the way or adjust in 5 different positions.
The F4 Customs windshield is wider than the tall boy and the wind protection is much better since it will move the air out and around you due to the width.

I'm 5'-11" with 32 inch inseam. For me the tallboy was horrible. I had to use an Xscreen with it.
I now have the F4 21" vented. Look completely over the windshield and the wind hits me at the top of my head.

That’s weird. I’m 5’10” and it was the most pleasant experience I’ve ever had with wind noise on a F3. I would assume the F4 with vents would be even better.

The F4 windshield greatly reduces head buffeting and move the air oit and around the rider and co rider

Does anyone know the height (from the gas tank up) & the length of the tall boy? Also, does the tall boy have 2 eyebrow cut holes in it or is it solid? I have seen both claiming to be tall boys.

Here at f4 Custom’s when we did our testing we found that the tallboy was to narrow and because you set so far back away from the windshield the wind hits the windshield and goes around it it comes back and hits the rider and the co-rider therefore not providing the wind protection that you expect. At f4 Custom’s we make the windshield wider so the air is directed around the rider and co rider. We also have the air wings if you want more protection for your hands and shoulders as a add on which really direct the air out and around. We would love to discuss this with you so please feel free to call us at 330-968-4644

I had one of these on a previous bike and when I bought the F3L I figured I would try it on before spending money on a new windscreen. I really like it. I'm 5'10'' as well. I usually go speed limit 65 mph / 100 kph. I have an Arai X Corsair and it works really well. I had the V version of the corsair I it had more buffeting. I think you will find that the helmet design and shape can and do make a difference.

I have a 2017 F3L; I'm now trying out my 4th windshield type, so feel I can speak to a number of points raised here. Of course, it is necessary to first understand that windshields, like seats, tires, etc., are very much a matter of personal preference - what suits one guy is terrible for the next. Also, my comments are somewhat conditioned by the fact that the Spyder is the first of my 3 or 4 previous bikes even to have a windshield - so I start from a background of having had to tolerate (and become used to) wind, bugs, rain, hail in my face. That said, here goes:

We (wife and I) began with the short stock shield. I wasn't that bothered, but she was getting buffeted, and I wanted to help her out. We switched to an F4 23" tinted, no vent. Very quiet, calm, pleasant ride; what Don says about his product is very correct. It is well designed and highly effective. I'm 5'10", about 29" inseam, ride my F3L with stock bars and floorboards in position 4. We began with the stock seat but switched to an Ultimate - comparatively, this raised me 1" and lowered my wife about 1-1/2"; caused by difference in one-piece vs. two-piece seating. Seat change didn't seem to affect our experience with the F4 Shield. Biggest drawback was that I could no longer use the expensive BRP cover which was too narrow to fit over the F4 shield (really designed to custom fit the Tall Boy). Also, having hauled the bike to FL for winter riding, the climate was hotter and I wanted more airflow. A third (personal) reason for switching from the F4 23" tinted was that the top of the shield (for me) was right at eye level, and I was getting two different "looks" when going down the road - my vision kept jumping back and forth from clear to tinted to clear, etc. If choosing (for myself) again, I would go with a 21" clear, probably vented. I like to look over a shield, not through, and believe 21" would have worked better for both wife and I; we ride two-up about 80% of the time.

I went from the F4 to a Tall Boy. Really liked the looks of it on the Spyder; aesthetically, it compliments the bike a bit better than the larger F4. Ride-wise, it is much more effective than the short stock shield. Not near as quiet as the F4, nor as calm, but very decent at moving air up and over rider and passenger. Not bad; however, having heard great comments about the X-creen "Tour" add-on deflector which attaches to the top of your windshield, I decided to try one, if only just to see what it might do. You can get these things for about $130 or so, and in either a 'bolt-on' (permanent) or a 'clamp-on' (removable) version; I'm using the latter. I decided to try this out on the short stock shield first. It's pretty effective. It's breezy - great for me in the warmer FL air, where I do ride more solo. The wife is also satisfied so far; no serious buffeting. Very adjustable; you can change the airflow patterns to suit your likes or needs. Very solid at high speed too. We just trailered the Spyder back north on the Interstate. I didn't even bother to take the X-creen off, just flattened it. We drove at full limits all the way, no problems, even in big truck turbulence.

I was going to go further and try the X-creen mount on the Tall Boy, just to compare. My thinking is that it will probably result in even less breeze or noise. I suspect that it will move air even higher and wider than when mounted on the short stock shield. However, if I decide I don't need it, I'll probably have a nice, barely used Tall Boy for sale.

Lamonster has a fairly recent windshield for the F3L that seems to be getting good reports; it's something I have thought about trying, too, in my search for the ideal. And, there are other makes and choices (CalSci, Madstad, etc.) that haven't been tried by me or mentioned by others here yet.

Most of us are individually fussy about what we like, and what we can/will tolerate. Just remember that the above is based upon my personal reactions/preferences. What my head and my butt prefer may not suit yours; some others may even suggest my head is in my butt for even reaching these conclusions ....... now back to you.

Thanks Bushrat, very informative. My F3ST is almost done & I got a really good deal on a Tall Boy so I’m going to try that first. The F3L I test drove a month ago had one on it & it was great, however it did have stock bars and floorboard positions where mine has short reach & #4 pegs. It does look the best out of all the taller ones out there (haven’t seen the lamonster one in person yet to be able to judge it). I tried about 8 different taller shields on my F3 & nothing worked for me, so I ran the route 129. It only took wind off my chest but at least the wind on my helmet was clean air. However that still got tiring after a couple hundred miles. I’m also looking for a set of stock black windshield brackets if you know anyone looking to get rid of theirs. I’ll keep you updated on my experiences with the tall boy when I get it (May 17th).

Hi stebrock, "the wind hits me at the top of my head" does that mean there's still some buffeting?

Just got my new F3L SS 2022 and I get some buffeting, light to medium. I use to rode a F3S SS with the Route 129 without any buffeting.

    I'm 5'11'.
