Default If/When Ryker Chip Key Mechanically Fatigues

At some point, the action of putting on & taking off the chip key from its mount will fatigue the plastic, and when you're going down the road, one of the tabs will break off, and your key will go flying off! Anyone give thought to this potential scenario?

You could probably make a lanyard with a zip tie, going thru two of the tabs.

I really only take mine off when I am shopping or something. I can see it in the parking lot at work and it is in a locked garage at home. Besides, if I took the key off at work all my cohorts couldn't have so much fun riding it around the parking lot.

Sales person tried to sell me it could stay in your pocket & didn't need to clip on every time. Like I said "tried" , seems feasible I guess, & not for me.

Been using one of these "fobs" on the snowmobile for 4 years. No problems yet with breakage.

4 years sounds good enough for me. I'll do 4 and then switch and do 4 with the other key (two came with mine). By the end of 8 years I'll be ready to trade. Then again might not get to 8 before a trade. I wouldn't worry about it.

I tried riding without the key. Got a message to check key in the bottom display which replaced the tachometer reading. It would also replace the miles to empty reading or anything else set to display there. Bike ran fine with the key removed after starting.

At least you can get home, if the unlikely happens.

I thought key fob could be pulled off and put away once the bike is started. Isn't that the case?

Maybe I'll just add a lanyard. After all, the chances of your key falling out of your pocket after starting it may be greater than it falling off!

My Sea Doo has the four sided FOB and one broke off and it still held on fine ever since. Of course I have the spare fob on board.

If you remove the key after the tryke is started, you get an annoying message about the key missing at the bottom of the display.

I am not sure exactly why a key would break, but it is a very simple thing to just sew a small leather cover on the top part of the key with a lanyard or something attached to it.

Too bad we can't just drill a small hole in the thing and fit a proper key ring! I don't suppose the chip would like that though!

Somebody on one of the numerous ryker facebook groups did that. As I recall, they popped the fob open to find a safe spot to drill and did it.

There is a U-Tube video of drilling a Can Am key and it still worked. What I would be concerned about is just how water-proof the components inside the key are after the hole is drilled in it.

It doesn't seem waterproof already, as the white covers are loose & not firmly sealed.

I'll have to find that video. I only want a 'key' ring so that I can attach it to a zipper or something when I take it out/off. And I don't think water would really affect the chip anyway, just let it dry out. OK, the video is of a Spyder key and they are somewhat different (much like my Vespa chip key). I suspect drilling very near the edge would be OK, will probably try it!

I will be putting a leather cover on a key when I have some time. I will post a picture when I do. I do some leather work. Might try one with short leather loop.

Edit: I guess it's not ball shaped, but rather somewhat diamond shaped about 1/4" thick!

Your dealer can reprogram the DESS key to work with your Ryker. Just buy one of these and take to the dealer for reprogramming.

That lanyard is just what I was thinking of! IF it can be programmed to suit a Ryker I'll take it.
Of course, car dealers get a pretty penny to program a spare key, so who knows.
