From everything I've read about the DESS module ( and I read every post with a complaint ) no-one has ever offered this info ….. The main screen will inform you if it isn't working ( orange screen of death )…. the bike won't start - there are temporary fixes that will work, but once the Module has indicted the CODE , it' is on the way to complete failure ….. Over the years the DESS Module was really a Non-issue ( from 08 to 13 ) in 14 some IDIOT engineer had too much time on their hands and decided to FIX it ….. He failed badly and that's when the modules became a Problem ….. Starting in 2017 forward the Modules have become less of an issue …. Possibly they finally got it tweeked or the Quality control from the Module makers got better. Starting in 2014 when the issue started not all Modules were failing, however it they did start to fail at an alarming rate..... I doubt yours is a problem ….. good luck …. Mike

    Insert key and turn on.
Listen for the fuel pump to run for a couple seconds. No sound it may be the DESS, but there are many other possible causes. If it does run. The DESS and key are good.
No sound from pump. Watch the display for about a minute. If "BAD KEY' scrolls across the screen. Then disappear. If so the key or DESS is bad.

I’ve just been told by a dealer mechanic the DESS problem comes from interference from the radio antenna. I had this issue two years ago but it went away after about an hour. They added some thicker iron shield in the DESS unit as an attempt to reduce this interference. I have had a couple of momentary orange DESS screens but it went away on the second attempt. I also have a 2014 RT-S SE6. I broke the original antenna off (garage door) and have replaced with a shorty.

Thanks to all. I checked for codes. Said no active code. Start button does not work. Check the whole starting system everything checks out good. Turn key on hit mode button jump the relay yellow/red removed terminal to ground it will start. Any ideals with the start button. Thanks.

If I understand what you just said ( and I think I do )- What that Tech said to you ……. This puts the BS meter OFF the scale …… #1. either the Tech is CLUELESS or is just LIEING ….. and at most dealerships this is a common problem …….

My DESS module failed ….. the Module was replaced ( under warranty ) …… they didn't do anything to or for the Antennae. ….. " Iron shield " I think that is a dubious fix …. " Lead " maybe but I doubt Iron would have any effect. ….But then the TECH claimed it was the Antenna there have been some Antenna's that were changed, but most were not ( according to posters on this forum )…. good luck with that dealership ...…………..jmho ….
