Default Harley davidson speaks to declining bike sales

NEWS - HARLEY DAVIDSON SPEAKS TO DECLINING BIKE SALES

Apparently the Baby-Boomers all have motorcycles.

Generation X is only buying a few, and the next generation isn't buying any at all.

A recent study was done to find out why Millennials don't ride motorcycles:

    Here are the study results:

    1. Pants won't pull up far enough for them to straddle the seat.

    2. Can't get their phone to their ear with a helmet on.

    3. Can't use 2 hands to eat while driving.

    4. They don't get a trophy and a recognition plaque just for buying one.

    5. Don't have enough muscle to hold the bike up when stopped.

6 Might have a bug hit them in the face and then they would need emergency care.

7 Motorcycles don't have air conditioning.

    8. They can't afford one because they spent 12 years in college trying to get a degree in Humanities, Social Studies or Gender Studies for which no jobs are available.

    9. They are allergic to fresh air.

    10. Their pajamas get caught on the exhaust pipes.

    11. They might get their hands dirty checking the oil.

    12. The handle bars have buttons and levers and cannot be controlled by touch-screen.

    13. You have to shift manually and use something called a clutch.

    14. It's too hard to take selfies while riding.

    15. They don't come with training wheels like their bicycles did.

    16. Motorcycles don't have power steering or power brakes.

    17. Their nose ring interferes with the face shield.

    18. They would have to use leg muscle to back up.

    19. When they stop, a light breeze might blow exhaust in their face.

    20. It could rain on them and expose them to non-soft water.

    21. It might scare their therapy dog, and then the dog would need therapy.

    22. Can't get the motorcycle down the basement stairs of their parent's home.

MY daughter is 26 and started riding 2 years ago. Looks normal no tats or piercings, No drugs, great job. I'm a proud dad. She has a Triumph Daytona 675R. Little to fast for my liking. But she's fully geared up.

Indeed it's fun to pick on millennials and paint them with a broad brush. That's a pretty good list.

Having two millennials and two -whatever-they-call-that-generation-that-comes-after-the-millennials- myself, and knowing all their friends, indeed there are stereotypes they fit and many they don't. I see how my kids and their cousins and their friends are all doing and honestly I think our future is in good hands. I'm a Gen-X'r. Millennials view the world differently than I do. I viewed it differently than my boomer parents who viewed it differently than their greatest generation parents. Only the millennials do drugs, have tats, and slack-off?

The problem with motorcycles, especially new ones, is cost. Millennials are growing up in a world of transportation that is neither cheap nor easy to work on yourself. The cost of a car or motorcycle, the cost of insuring them, just the overall cost of owning vehicles. Even my kids who are kinda "gear-heady" are like "man I just can't afford that stuff." Is it any wonder they are looking more at public transportation and forgoing cars for bicycles or whatever?

When I was 25, I owned a 1967 Camaro Rally Sport with a built 327. Trying doing that at age 25 today.

One of my sons bought an 2001 Suzuki SV650. $1800. He loves it and it is what he could afford. Spend 10 grand on a new H-D Sportster? Ain't happening.

perhaps if they spent a little less on e-cigs, smart phone & the plans and a few other nonsense things they might be able to afford the bike

Student loans play a big part in young folks choices these days. Just try buying a lift ticket. Many young people find it hard to go skiing once a month let alone making a bike payment once a month.

I'm starting to have sticker shock just as my 95 yr old grandmother had over a decade ago. Snow skiing was $18, concerts, college & pro football games, etc. On the other end one can buy a large TV for under $500. Cars have a wide price range--but you can buy a 750 hp Mustang for $50K, Honda Civic's are faster than the 60's muscle cars. I blame video games for pulling down newer generations motivation. Major College tuition is ridiculously $ high. The gap between the Haves & Have Nots has grown. This new income tax plan cost me $5800 tax due & I'm a big current President supporter. Life on life's terms--I guess we need to adjust to it.
