Elec Power available on ST-S for heated gear?
I just inherited heated liners. A 90W FirstGear Jacket liner, Pants liner and Socks.
I'll be using a 2 zone PWM heater controller.
Do I have enough electrical power on my 2013 STS SM5 to run this gear?
I switched the headlights to LaMonster LEDs so that should free up a few amps.
I have OEM heated grips and have added additional LED turn signal lights and driving lights.
I may be taxing the magneto. I guess I have to get out the voltmeter and make some measurements.
Please advise of your experiences.
Thanks,
David C

Hey Haze.
I have a 2010 RTSM5. I use a Hotwired 12V Heated Jacket Liner and gloves everyday. Combined they are 96W and 8.2A. I have no issue. I get to work in the am where the bike sits outside for 9 hours (today it was 19F when I got to work) and it starts right up when I leave for home. I store the bike in an unheated trailer at night with the tender on. So to answer your question I see no issue using your gear.

You would only use 90W on high. I don't think you could stand it that hot.

90 watts will be 7.5 amps. Be sure you hook upto a circuit that will handle at least that.

Not a problem. Hook direct to the battery with an inline fuse and you will be fine. I use two heated jacket liners and gloves with dual control for me and single for the wife and we never have a problem....

Thank you to all for the responses.
I have a direct hookup to the battery thru my auxiliary fuse block.
As soon as the snow/ice and salt are gone I will test the new heated gear.
Thanks again.

Wow, here I am sliding in on a thread and picking up some knowledge. My wife and I have some older Gerbing jacket liners left over from the Gold Wing days. We have never tried to use them for all the reasons mentioned above. I guess I better see what the wattage is and re-think the proposition. The older Gerbings operate with a pulse method of temp control. Don't know about the newer. Highwayman is right, even Alaska we could never stand to be even at half throttle.
Thanks for this post and all the feedback.
