Default Saved myself almost $300.00 today

I just bought a 2007 Toyota Sienna mini-van..... It only had one Key since the Key has achip in it ( like the Spyder ) an ordinary key from the hardware store won't work in the Ignition ..... so perusing the inter-net I found some folks who showed me how to DIY it. Bought two spares on amazon for 15.00 and I will have to have them cut. But this info was a real find …..later ...Mike ...…….PS the cars own computer does the Transponder code entry thing

What amazes me is that we now have a whole world of knowledge at our fingertips. Gone are the days of looking things up in the Encyclopedia (which was outdated even before we bought them from the door-to-door salesman). This is a Spyder Forum but, yet, the information shared in off topic area is enlightening and makes me think. And thinking is good.....I think..... Jim

Since we are on the topic of obtaining duplicate keys, and since I'm new to this party, where and how do we get Spyder duplicates?
Ours is a red, black and chrome 2017 F3 Limited. Bought new in 2/2019. The avatar is my first bike back in 1952, a Simplex Servi-Cycle. Photo taken at the Barber Museum.

Well it depends on the YEAR of the Spyder ….. I haven't checked yet, but if I could find a way to Clone my Sienna KEY via the internet ….. I wouldn't be surprised that this can be done for Spyders ……. Mike

See my signature for my model and year. It would be extremely helpful if all would do that so we would know which bike they are referring to.

    Default As I remember...

Up thru 13 you could get keys online and clone them at local key shops. After that 14 on they are different and can only be duplicated by dealers. At least the chip part. May have been the reason for the DESS error issue, but you can get keys that will open things but not run the spyder...

When I needed a spare key, the only way I found was to buy a blank from the dealer ($$$$), take it to a key shop and have it cut, then back to the dealer to have it "programed" for the bike..... Jim

The next time you need a spare I would check out the inter-net and see if that key ( a chipped key ) can be self programmed. From a casual perusal it appears many common cars/trks have the ability to program it's own keys ………………. I also saw a video where even a NON-chipped key can be used, …. because as long as a chipped key is near the IGNITION switch, that Chipped Key TRANSPONDER will clear the Fault circuit and allow the NON -chipped key to start your vehicle ….. ………...…. And the "middle of the road" solution is to contact a few locksmiths if you are skiddish about doing it yourself.
They often can do it for less than half the dealer cost.

Possible but not likely that locksmiths can give a similar discount for Spyder security keys......because the market segment is so small that it's not worth their time.

Have you actually done this and have a working end product or just found a YouTube video that shows how it's done? I was thinking of doing the same thing with my pick up truck key, but not sure if it will actually work.

I have a 2011 and a 2014 key for Spyder...but happily have not had need to re-key or replace lost ones.

But...any information about adapting what you did to Spyder would be helpful. $100 to $400 and up to get the stuff done...is a bit on the pricey side for sure.

Before you waste any money, you need to check on your model car/truck first to see if it will allow more than two transponders at a time.
Many of them won't, and if you program a 3rd one, one of the first two must be deleted.
