We had one about that size wandering through our horse pasture a few years back. I wanted to get it out of there and picked it up, trying to get far enough back on his shell so he couldn't bite me. That was tough as his neck was so long that he could reach about halfway back. I guess the 'pros' carry them by the tail.

Looks like a good starter for turtle stew. Mean little dude. Quick too.

Yup, by the tail is the best way. I remember as a kid my Grandma had one in her rain barrel for a few days until she made stew out of it.
We used to catch them outta the l;ake at camp too. Nasty critters they are!!!

While growing up in Houston suburbs, we had several bayous and ponds in the area. We would go crawling through those hoping to catch critters. There were always some stories between kids of what they caught and where. A few people started saying not to go into pond that was far across from our neighborhood in this field. They had some kid 5~6 basicaly lose their foot just above the ankle from either a gator or a turtle. Happended in front of a few of his friends wading in the same pond. A few more incidents occured in the same pond and some locals went hunting. Boy did they find a turtle, this thing was the size of a sledding disc, it's head was like a football. It freaks me out to see that turtle man, those people that grab catfish with their hands freaks me out, too.
In the twisties I was playing the tart...
