See if you can buy a used one for less than $180.

I don't remember seeing anybody who does "repairs" except Garmin.

That sucks, but $180 still less than any price I have seen for a used one. How long is the warranty with the rebuild?

You can buy a very good GPS for an automobile for a lot less than that, and it may not be waterproof but a pastic bag and rubberband will fix that. There are many mounts that will work with the Spyder, the choice is yours. The problem you describe points to either a power problem or the display, and you are probably stuck with the Garmin repain center.

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?

That sucks! However, if you like your 590 (I like mine very much) then $180 is better than changing it out for something else. Remember, that harness for the 590 isn't cheap. If you check on YouTube for Garmin screen replacement there are many videos, but I couldn't find one that shows how to do it for the 590.

Pay the $180. These things last forever except for the fluke occurrence like this one.

Unless you don't really like it, in which case get what you like.

Have you accomplished any of the typical DIY possible fixes. Remove the battery if possible and hold the power switch on for a few seconds. Is there any means to do a master system reset. Sometimes Garmins have keystroke access to various systems. This is not explained in the owners manuals. They may gain access to certain functions Garmin did not intend owners to play with and being Garmin they share nothing it seems.

Yes You Tube videos may offer insight, but in the past I found GPS specific websites / forums with a huge amount of technical info, and the ability to ask for answers from GPS smart guys and girls.

Typical Garmin is they do not repair your unit and return it, most times they send out a previously refurbished unit. If you have any type of info, maps, open street maps, settings or memory installed, gather it up and out of your unit before sending it in for replacement.

I'd guess that the screen/card has physically had it, & the only fix for that will be a dismantle, unsolder, replace with new screen/card, resolder, reassemble everything type job.... in which case $180 seems pretty cheap for what they likely hafta do!!

But yeah strip off &/or back-up/save elsewhere everything you want to be able to re-access BEFORE you send it away for repairs.... you should only need to lose the whole lot once to learn that lesson!

Exactly, and there may even be other “hidden” acceses worth trying before sending it in.

Differences in people and the way you ride. I intentionally turn my GPS volumn down. I do not need it to continually tell me I need to turn around becasue I have missed turn.

Agree, visual only. Very, very seldom do I have GPS audio on.

    Indeed.....different strokes........

When riding, I am watching the traffic and the scenery. I am NOT watching a GPS screen.
Without the audio prompts I consider a GPS virtually worthless......and somewhat of a safety hazzard.

The only time I do not want to be notified that I "missed a turn" is when I do that on purpose to take an alternate route and it seems to catch up fairly quickly.

If I am out just randomly riding with no destination in mind, I leave it shut off until it is time to find my way back home.
I've been pretty much lost around Atlanta a few times and the Garmin is invaluable when that happens.

I have very good luck working with the Garmin factory repair department. Had a unit go on the frits. Called them up they talked me threw the reset steps then they decided it had to be repaired, sent it in they sent me another one to replace it. Worked fine ever since! Good company to work with!

A Google search for Garmin GPS repair brings up quite a few places that will repair them. Probably be worthwhile contacting a couple of them for a quote.

Have you connected it to your pc via USB? I just had a tablet do a similar thing and I ran across a note online about connecting it to my computer before sending it in for repair. Worked like a champ and the tablet has been fine since. Don't understand why they would be offering better results than a factory reset but I'll take it.
