    Hi Mike,

Re: My New Years routine Past & Present

I just got back from going out for a very nice steak with grilled prawns.

Tomorrow I will write donation checks for those organizations that I support.

And then on to whatever happens in 2019.

A few years ago (well, perhaps, many) I use to make sure to be there when midnight rolled around. And, Mike, I'm sure I saw you on your horse on TV..... Nowadays I usually celebrate midnight.....east coast time. That's 10 our time. This year is no exception. My wife went to Pennsylvania to surprise her mother for her birthday. So I am a bachelor for New Years. And, wifes birthday happens to be New Years day. So, she will call me midnight her time for a double wish.....birthday and New Year. Your escagot sure beat the frozen salsbury steak dinner I had. Going to have to scrounge around the freezer for something more exciting. I think there might be some jumbo shrimp in there for a nice shrimp cocktail. Gotta go look.....Happy New Year to all..... Jim

I wish you could cook for me, Mike. That all sounds delicious!

My best friend and I used to go to an adult singles dance on New Year's Eve. We'd spend part of December finding the right outfit and some shoes we were comfortable in for dancing for a few hours. We always had a lot of fun. After the dance many of us would then go for breakfast at some all-night place. Finally home by about 4 am. Then we'd put away the outfit because we didn't have anywhere else to wear it. Then she got married and I started getting sleepy earlier.

Last night I just stayed home and wait till midnight so I could say I saw the new year come in then crashed in bed.

Today I'll serve greens and black-eyed peas with whatever I cook for an entree. Greens for wealth in the new year and black-eyed peas for luck. My late mother would want us to continue that tradition. I think it's a southern thing.

Happy New Year to you! noisemaker-1880.gif

Somewhere I read the average American gains 6 pounds over the holidays.

So Far I've gained 3 1/2 and lost 1 doing nothing different.

We fell asleep watching "Perry Mason" re-runs, and wake up when the neighbor starts his Midnight fireworks celebration..
After that: we went to bed, and followed up with some "Last Alaskans" episodes...

Had a great diner with my wife Ali. Ricotta stuffed lasagna rolls, and chicken and cheesed stuffed lasagna rolls. Covered with a tomato pesto sauce. S/Western style salad. Dessert was Italian tricolored rainbow cookies. Watched some TV shows. Fell asleep 11:30. Yup. I'm old. Will get a ride in today, going to be in the low 80's. Happy New Year everyone!

Nothing special here either. The neighbors did the fireworks for us during the three hours preceding 12:00. We snacked and watched some TV. We don't go out on New Years Eve much these days.

Well, here's a few "different" New Year's traditions that came along with my wife from the Philippines: Every New Year's Eve, we first have to collect 13 kinds of round fruits -- only round ones, bananas don't work, and multiple copies of the same fruits don't count, either. Gets some funny looks at the grocery store. This is supposedly for good luck according to Chinese tradition although my wife isn't Chinese except perhaps in the sense that Elizabeth Warren is Native American. Then, as the midnight hour approaches, we fill all our pockets with coins and money to guarantee that we start the New Year with money. When midnight comes, we join in a group hug with anyone else unlucky enough to be around our crazy tradition (greatly embarrassing our children) and jump up and down and yell "Happy New Year." The last step is to open each door of the house and yell out, "Happy New Year," no doubt irritating the neighbors and further embarrassing our kids. But we've done this for 32 years and it must work because life is good.
