Default Lost keys to 2016 RSS

First of all I've been browsing the forums for a while, but just joined, you guys have been super helpful and I would like to thank everyone for the responses in advance!

Anyways, I lost my keys to my 2016 spyder RSS (Yes, both of them ). My dealer says I'll need a new ignition switch and DESS, and they want 5 hours of labor. Is this true?

I had seen mixed things on other threads, for all different years and some saying the DESS doesn't need to be replaced?

Can anyone shed some light? Can I change it myself and then just take it to the dealer for programming?

    Thank you!

Do you still have the small TAG that came with your keys ???? or did you record the Key number. If you did I'm pretty sure they can make another key using that info ….. good luck …. Mike

    Default Agree...

if you can get the key code they can cut the key and program it. Don't know if the dealer or BRP keep record of that but you could ask...

I found one of the sleeves, but I don't see any key code on it unfortunately.

A good Locksmith should be able to make new keys and follow the steps to program them for your bike.

    Default New ignition switch

You will need to get the ignition switch replaced with a new new one. Then connect the Spyder to BUDS to program it to accept the new keys. There is no need to replace the DESS module on a 2016 model. That only applies to models 2013 and earlier.

    Default Part number and cost.

    BRP part number and cost.
    710004277 Ignition Switch $259.99 USD
    Add 2 to 3 hours labour. $200 to $300

Best advice I can give you is find one of the original keys. The money saving potential is well worth your effort.

When both the keys and the key number are lost...not a lot more options out there. Keep us posted with your results.

A GOOD locksmith can make a key to fit the lock cylinder. Would be far cheaper than the cost of the ignition and its installation. Once the key mechanical works, it can be programmed to the bike. No need to replace anything.

Remember it MUST be a SPYDER key, because that will have the CHIP embedded in it......and that's what will be programmed to your Ignition switch ….. Mike

Thank you guys for the quick and informal answers! I'll first try to have a locksmith make a key to the cylinder with a Canam blank, if that doesn't work I'll order a new ignition switch which I found for $220. Install it and have the dealer program the keys. A $400 lesson worst case scenario. I'll make sure to keep everyone updated, going to bring it into the dealer on Tuesday to see if they have the keycode on record.

    Thanks again!

A good locksmith will also have replacement transponder keys that can be programmed to your bike, at a fraction of the BRP cost. My locksmith replaced my wife's key that broke off in her bike ignition. In the same week he had also replaced another Spyder riders full set of Spyder keys that were lost while vacationing through the area. It can easily be done.

One could also use an un-chipped key and simply turn DESS off.

If ONLY turning the DESS off were that easy.
Will BRP allow the dealers to do it ?? I'd pay to have that done.
Also, once the DESS is turned off, do subsequent firmware updates turn it back on ?
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Dealers are not forbidden to do it, its just that most do not opt for the BUDS software level that allows it. Requires a Megatech licence. Its a simple setting on the Keys page. Once turned off, it stays off. Updating the firmware does not reset this or other options.

It is easy if you have the right tools. Takes less than a minute once BUDS is connected.

My Spyder came with the key ring with 2-keys, 1-key holder and a rubber tag with a 1 circled and letters ZADI on it. Is that tag the key code?
    Thanks

Thank you guys for all your help!

Update: I went to the dealership and they are selling me the ignition switch for $218 + Tax which came out to $231. They are also charging me for 1.5 hours in labor plus taxes and fees which comes out to about 200. The total damage is $430 to get it back up and running. Unfortunately, the parts won't be here until Tuesday next week, but better than the almost $1k the other dealer wanted.

    Thanks again!
