Default Who Rides a Spyder to Work?

Just got to wondering who else rides their Spyder to and from work? I've been retired for years, but recently took a part-time job for extra cash and I ride my Spyder to/from work a fair bit of the time. It's only about 15 minutes each way in traffic, but it makes the commute a bit more pleasant when it isn't raining. I think we all tend to view our Spyders as recreational/hobby vehicles. But they aren't bad for a local commuter, either.

I have had my 30 mile commute for over 20 years. Have always ridden whenever possible. Being in central Massachusetts that means (1) there is a portion of the year that the bikes are hibernating, and (2) being a rural commute it is many times the best part of my day! If temps are above freezing, roads are dry... or in warmer weather I just look to see if I will make it to work dry. Riding home in the rain is OK, but I'd rather not have to worry about rain gear in the morning. There are weeks in warm weather that the car does not move from the garage.

Another good part about commuting on a bike is that there are days that the closer you get to work, the nicer the day looks to play hooky!

I walk to work - from bedroom to office down the stairs. I do however, ride for work. I have found that riding the Spyder to a construction site, or customer's office for an occasional meeting really makes my day. I used to ride most everyday to work, rain or shine, year round, years ago when I lived in Seattle.

We are in the same position. I walk from the house to my office, which is above my detached garage. But on occasion I have to go visit a job site, or visit a clients office. When the weather permits, I hop on my spyder and enjoy the visit. Sometimes I might have to strap a roll of 30x42 drawings to the back seat, but that is what bungee cords are for.

Retired now, but always rode a motorcycle to work unless there was ice. I only had a seven mile commute so temperature wasn't a factor. I enjoyed the ride and bikes got to park up front next to the guardhouse. I worked third shift and it was nice to get off work in the morning and take a longer way home. Let the morning air blow away the stress and thoughts of choking some idiot to death Yes, I had one of those jobs. That's why I retired at 56 and haven't looked back. I still enjoy an early morning ride.

I would if I had a job. And lived in a different city other than Las Vegas. There are just too many tourists here not paying attention to their driving, and free alcohol is served in almost all casinos, that it isn't worth the risk (to me) to use a motorcycle as a commuter here. Local police admit rear enders are the most common accident here, and MC riders will normally lose in those. And at any given time, they estimate 1/4 of the drivers on the road here wouldn't pass a BAC test. I'll ride my MC somewhere if I need to (dealer, meet someone else to go on a ride, get in/out of town for a road trip) but it will never be my main form of transportation out here. I want the added safety of a car body around me out here for routine transportation.

Mine is parked outside right now. Was in the 40's this morning, will probably get to the 50's. Wore the winter jacket and was fine. I favor it more than then my other ride, a Silverwing when its cold out. It just puts out more heat and has better shielding from the wind. When it gets warm again, it will be mostly 2 wheels since that bike is much cooler to ride.

I have ridden every bike I ever owned to work for over 50 years. Including the Spyder. I rode every day up until I retired. Great way to go to work.

I plan to ride as soon as I finish my yearly maintenance, hopefully this weekend, after figuring my taxes.

Only issue is riding directly into the sun - east in the morning and west in the late after noon.

Am in the retired gang too but I bought the Spyder as daily transportation as well as for shear fun. Remember though, in colder temperatures the temp gauge may come up to normal range on short trips but the oil may not reach normal operating temperature. The result over time can be water condensation in the oil. In the winter months my six mile ride to the gym becomes a 24 miler one way to ensure everything gets fully up to operating temp. Wind therapy is good for the soul.

I switch out between my 2005 Honda St1300 and my wife's 2010 RT SE5. On the SE5 today. It was the ST1300 yesterday LOL. My commute is 120 miles round trip.

Gotta equally disperse mileage around! =)

I’ve been riding mine to work since 2014. Sometimes work is as close as 100 miles but usually it is at least 1,000 miles. I have a fun commute.

I rode every day, rain or shine, from Apr/Oct. It was a nice 40 mile round trip commute. Usually put 2000 or less miles on the car during that time.

    Don't miss it...because I don't miss working.

If you're retired in Las Vegas, you have to find a different reason to ride. Like 120 miles one-way to Laughlin for a Bubba Gumps lunch. But it still counts as work, 'cos it's uphill with a headwind both ways.

What is this "winter" of which you speak? We moved to FL to avoid cold wx ops.
