Default 5th official, 8th unofficial Limp Mode today

Got my 5th service call for limp mode today. I told them to replace the gear postion sensor this time. Got my old SV today. One other irritating thing about today was somone hit my left fender, looks like it was another motorcycle. Got the front corner then it rolls off the side across the reflector. It's such a weird spot, I guess it could be a boot print too. They had several layoffs today and there were some angry people walking around. I didn't have time to mess with it as I just noticed it when at the dealer. I hope I can buff it out. They again, in one more limp mode...I won't care anymore.

We went ahead and submitted the info to several "Lemon Law" lawyers here in AZ via their individual "free case review" on the web. Looks to pretty much be a manufacturer pays the fees kinda thing. I'm out looking for a bike in the mean time, makes me nervous always using a dealership machine. If something happens to it, I am responsible.

There is nothing more that can be done with BRP to impress upon them how many problems you've had and get them to take a personal approach to your problem? You've been more than patient and BRP hasn't done its part to make you right!

Might be worth a shot at the grounding "fix" from BRP even if you might not have an SE5.

I don't have the Spyder or manual at this time. Is the coil mounted on a plastic base insulating it from Spyder? I find it hard to believe thay would mount it that way. I wonder if attaching a ceramic capcitor across the battery terminals and one from the coil mount to ground would do a better job.

I guess they are all too busy. I got a few replies via email, some are just confusing. Why would you advertise Arizona Lemon Law attourney on the internet, but reply that you don't practice in Arizona? Anyways, several form letters basically saying they were all to busy. Got 1 phone call, the best info came from a friend of a friend to check for any ADR's(alternate dispute resolutions) in the back of the owners manual. Start there then ramp it up if they don't respond. Unfortunately, the manual is in the trunk...at the dealer.

Isn't there a link to the manual on the home page here?

The new sensors didn't work, it went into limp mode immediately. They tried to clear and reset, but they came right back. I guess they are going to try the wheel alignment.

That's just messed up. Yesterday, when I scheduled my 3000 mile service, I mentioned that my machine has been shifting much better, but that it had stuck in neutral a couple of times. I told him about the 'wiring' fix that I had read about in this forum.

He had the gall to tell me that I should ride more and spend less time on the internet. Then he went on to say how my spyder is the only one they sold that has problems, as if I am imagining everything. Am beginning to wonder if an extra 50 miles to the next nearest dealer might not be a bad idea.

Go to the other dealer... only after you tell the current one the collective knowledge on this forum alone exceeds any that he can come up with.

+1 By my rough estimate, there are probably five dealerships that participate (on and off) on this forum. I think that one of them was the SpyderLover who originally posted about the ground wire fix. Now add in all the real mechanics, bike builders, mechanically inclined folks, etc. and there is a ton of knowledge and experience here. Quite a few people here have owned Spyders longer than some dealers have been selling them. I know I trust information on here as much as I trust my Spyder service guy and he has proven himself to be very knowledgable about the Spyder.

Default have they tried this ?

    I'm a late comer to this thread. is yours a SM5 or SE5 ? any mods ? Mine is a 2008 SM5, Silver Moon.

Last week i was installing my 7 inch handlebars and center console, mud flap lights, and LED mirror directionals, and double play.

I had the front end off, and the side panels off back to the fuel tank. Got everything working (so i thought). i had unplugged the fog lights and headlights.

I plugged the lights back in started the bike, got a check engine message. the headlights and fog lights would not come on. shut the bike down. check the fuses. all o.k. start again, went to limp mode and would not start.

the cause was the 6 pin connector from the headlights was not fully seated. in fact the plastic end of the plug was showing signs of arcing and heating.

reinserted the plug back together and the bike started without any error codes. no problems since then.

possibly when the machine was in for service, the tech might have dislodged the plug enough to give you a intermittent limp.

It's an SM5 with no electrical mods...every time I start to feel comfortable around this thing again and start looking at accessories...the fracken thing breaks down again.

OK, so VCM is on order, probably get the trike back next Wednesday. Kudos to RideNow for letting me bring the SV back and lending me a V Star 1300 with luggage for my trip to El Paso/New Mexico.

Got a message when I was out on the road...riding a motorcycle that's not mine again. The new VCM came in, they removed my old one and confirmed through some external test that it is infact broken. Should have the spyder back tomorrow with a new yaw sensor, GPS and VCM.

Let us hope this one is the charm. You really need to try having your spyder in your possession for extended periods of time.

I could fill this screen up with curse words right now, but I won't. I won't be getting my spyder back today...during a road test with the new yaw sensor, VCM and GPS...it went back into limp mode. Now BRP wants to change the entire wire harness.

Well, the good news is that you'll have a brand new Spyder before you're done. Good luck, Jim.

I'm sure those curse words could peel paint, too. Don't hardly blame you. So sorry! I remember us discussing replacing the wiring harness way back when. Of course they wouldn't hear of it. You have the patience of a saint. I hope this gets resolved for good...soon! Hang tough.

Good luck, hope they find a solution.
