Almost time for first service and need advice
I bought my F3 Limited a little over a year ago. It has about 2,200 or 2,300 miles on it now and I know you are supposed to get the first service at 3,000 miles. At the end of this month though we are trailering out to South Dakota and I'm pretty sure I'll hit that 3,000 miles in SD. I'm leaning towards getting done before the trip.
My questions:
1. What do they do at the first service?
2. Should we take it to a dealer or do it ourselves?
3. If we take it to a dealer, is it just simple or does it matter how good they are?
I ask that because the local dealer, ASK Power Sports doesn't have a good reputation. There is a dealer about an hour away in Springfield call Ride 1 Powersports that I have heard better things about.

The 3,000 mile service is an oil change/filter and general check over. It should cost in the ballpark of $300. You will then be good for another 9,300 miles OR one year--whichever happens first.
Since you are already at one year, I would recommend having it serviced BEFORE the trip.

At one year, I would recommend having it serviced BEFORE the trip.
My first service, at my local dealer, was about $240. I'd say have it serviced where you want to develop a relationship with the service department.

You can find what is done/checked in the 3,000 mile service on pg 91 of your operator's guide. Personally, I would do the oil and filter change myself and check all the items on the list you can personally do. Document your maintenance actions in an MFR and save receipts for the supplies/parts you purchase. Check with the guys at Honda, Suzuki, Can Am of Jackson in Jackson, Ohio. My 3000 mile check up was under $200.

You definitely should have the dealer hook it up to BUDS to check for updates. If it is a 16 there is a service bulletin that needs to be completed. Change the oil yourself but have them do the other checks so the service is recorded.

Let the dealer do the first service. From what I recall from other threads, the oil drain plug was installed at the factory by the mighty Thor using his magic hammer. IOW, it's on real tight. If you strip it (and that's a real possibility from what I recall), the cost is on you. Let the dealer break the plug free. If he strips the plug, it's on him to make it right.
Once the plug's been freed up, subsequent oil changes are safe to perform.
