Not necessarily.
Some of the most highly respected forums, on a variety of subjects, do not have an "off topic" sub-forum and closely police the posts.
True that this eliminates a scant few people who just CAN'T BEAR the thought of not being able to "preach" on their favorite subject and/or start heated arguments. I think this is a good thing.

My vote would be to keep the Off-Topic sub-forum. I never understood the need or value of it before, but I've learned a lot from these threads, including about myself. I don't have any other social outlet anything like this.

The Off Topic Forum was pretty much created due to a member creating havoc on here. I actually enjoyed his shenanigans (for lack of a better word). I hope he is doing well. Most members on here felt sorry for him at the beginning, but that soon passed. He had some personal issues. He was creative to say the least, his posts and guitar playing.
Utah, I do believe you would have enjoyed him. But, I don’t think you’ll ever reach his level. Those were the good old days, where a fight was a fight, and no meowing allowed. I think I’d better stop there.

If you're talking about Cuz'n John, I did engage in some of his threads before he got blocked. I wasn't offended by anything he posted, even the really off-color stuff. Too bad he's gone. He seemed like a really decent guy.

You are way, way off base. You have no idea who he was. He was an original cast member. He was from California, and I’m not sure how many members now were actually on here during his reign.

There is a song from the movie "Frozen" sung by Idina Menzel with the lyrics "Let it go, let it go" that instantly came to mind when I read this thread.

It all boils down to "you can't please all the people all the time". Not all posters are experienced but still want to say something regardless. Perhaps we all need to be more
tolerant of each other even if we are absolute in our minds they are wrong.
Take for instance, I was only wrong once in my life. That's when I thought I was wrong but it turned out I was actually right.

So you sound very cranky and things should be done to please you.
So take your terrible advise and push it on everyone because you know best. Thanks for sharing all your great wisdom

I stopped complaining a long time ago. I just read the heading to see if it might interest me or not. If not I go to the next one

That's the whole point of this post. If people would put the true subject in the heading you could skip the ones of no interest to you.
People post I need help? Put my 2011 RTS is ( subject here). Not hard to do. If I have a 2011 will open and try to help. If you just put I need help I am going to skip by you.

All the blathering aside, it's actually a good question.
Ties in with for sale items in threads other than "for sale"
Even vendors do it and we can't post in their thread, only reply
Posting for sale items in general threads is, in my opinion, either ignorant or rude, or both.
From the "vendor forum"
"Only VENDORS should start a post on this board, all others will be moved."

Helping inexperienced members to make better posts is NOT being a complainer.......if it is presented properly.
(Blunt note: If moderators did more of that, the users would feel that they have to comment on it less.)

There was a day when the subject line really did matter. Remember your super fast 9600 baud (that was after years of 1200 and 2400 baud!) dial up modem and Compuserve and off line readers? The smart way to read what was on the bulletin board was to sign in, download the list of subject lines from the forum of interest, and then disconnect. Then you'd go down through the list and mark the ones you wanted to look at, dial in and sign in again, download the posts you had marked, and disconnect. You'd read the posts at your leisure without incurring phone charges, write up your responses, dial in and sign in again, and upload your posts. Back then, in the early nineties, time really did equal money. Today with our 100 to 1000 mb/second internet connections and flat monthly rates, the impact of misleading subject lines is mostly a little bit of misspent time and aggravation. Let's keep things in perspective. Life is good!

Why is it that people both "Thank for this Post" and "Like this Post"? Isn't that redundant?
Why not choose the one that best expresses your sentiment, and stick with it!
Merry Christmas! (And NO, I did not start another separate thread just to say that!)
