    Default American Flag

Looking for a Great 3X5 American Flag that won't fall apart when traveling at 80mph for long distances. Have bought the polyester and reinforced them, but they don't last very long.

    Thanks

Good luck there, much less finding a mount that will hold at those speeds
if you have one please share as many have asked for PGR missions and processions

I have the mount.. It was made by the local college in their metal working shop. Cost was nothing.. Using a PVC pipe with a dowel in the center. On the outside I have used parachute cord wound around it. It won't break. I have had it up to speed many times, but the flags don't hold up.

How about a stiff rod perpendicular to the mast to support the top and bottom edges of the flag? The idea is to minimize whipping in the wind. I think that's the only way you're going to keep the flag from fluttering to pieces. You'll lose the beauty of it waving in the wind, but......

If this flag doesn't work for you then I don't think there is any out there that will hold up like you're wanting. Keep in mind an 80 mph wind is hurricane force.

I think the only way to have a flag doesn't deteriorate in an 80 mph wind is to just use one painted on sheet metal.

For what it's worth, the more flex there is in the rod holding it, the longer time a cloth flag will last!!

The stiffer that the supporting rod/mast remains at speed, the quicker the snapping/fluttering of the flag will damage it, especially at the flapping ends... that's why flags on halyards generally last a fair bit longer than flags fixed directly to a mast or pole.

You might look into having one made from sail material. It holds up for thousands of hours on boats; not at 80mph mind you, but probably the most durable material available for flying in the wind. Hint; material for a storm jib is the most durable in the sailing industry.

I flew flags for years on my Harley, but they were 2x3 not 3x5. The mounts eventually broke. 2x3 is still a big flag when flown on a bike, but less stain on components. I used 1inch aluminum pipe. It's light and durable.

Default My flag pole for my Spyder

Here is the method I use to fly my 3X5 flag, and I did go up to 75 MPH without any bending. Took a 5/8 metal threaded bar, double nuts on each side of the washer/clips, double nut on top and bottom to attach to my hitch, and used a cheap flag pole to cover the threaded bar. I do go thru flags pretty fast, and as mentioned prior is most likely related to the stiffness of the pole.

Are you talking 3'x5' or 3"x5". Check out Rumbling Pride for the 3"x5" flags and mounts of all types .

If talking 3" X 5" almost any motorcycle dealer sells them (except CanAm).
