Oh yeah..!!
Ran across, not into or over, a couple in my time on the back roads. Even their cousins the alligators try running over one of them.

Snapping turtles have very long necks and can get you if you're not careful. I've always picked them up by the base of the tail. It won't hurt them and you're able to keep all of your fingers.
