The sales tax is a one time charge when you purchase the vehicle! That would be collected when you purchase the item. You will not pay it again. You will pay personal property tax each year, but it is included in the annual fee you pay for registration to DMV ( that portion of the fee is deductible). That is included in the $222.00 fee you are paying on this invoice. When you receive your renewal notice from DMV it will be itemized. If you are paying that $643 every year, then Alice is getting rich on you!

Not sure what exactly your saying.

previous owner payed sales tax when she bought the Spyder. i paid $643 in sales tax based on the vehicles sold price. Is that not double dipping on sales tax? Guess I am not smart enough to understand it. No big. It is done.

No Alice fee is $60 and a one time thing for each vehicle of course.

THAT'S what I was saying but some got confused that we are saying WE pay sales tax each year on the vehicle.

However many times a vehicle is sold through the years, the state of NJ collects 7.5% of it's "fair market value" each time it's sold. (You can't claim to have paid only $1000 for that Spyder. It may take a year or two, but the taxman will send you a revised bill for what they say is it's FMV)

Sales tax is collected once per sales transaction. You will pay sales tax one time when you buy it. If you sell it, then the new buyer will pay sales tax one time, so on and so forth, for each separate transaction. No double dipping involved.

    Hi Boiler,

Re: Sales tax is collected once per sales transaction.

Oregon does not have a sales tax. However, this is how I understand it is in Washington state; just across the river.

Just a curiousity, if you buy a vehicle when you are single, then get married & add the new wife onto the title; is there a sales tax for that change in ownership?

And I know that each state may be different,

Not in Illinois.......yet! I had to pay $25 sales tax for my Spyder because I bought it out of state. If a state charged sales tax, again, because of the addition of a spouse on the title, I would be talking to a lawyer and starting a protest!

    That WOULD be double dipping!

Why would you need to add her to the title?

I believe that in NJ, if one were to sell a vehicle to a close family member they would waive the sales tax collection. As in everything else we discuss, each state varies in their rules. YMMV.

You paid sales tax only one time. You also paid a "registration" fee but that is not part of the sales tax. We have the same thing here in AZ but the difference is in the fee itself. Yours was $222 and ours is $8. Sales tax amount varies by location (county) and whether or not you are buying from a dealer (you pay sales tax) or a private party (no sales tax).

Sales tax is collected, if applicable, each time the vehicle is sold and is paid by the buyer. Only once.

According to the Washington State DMV the fee for changing/adding/deleting a name on a vehicle title is $12. No sales tax.

Perhaps, but if you live in a Community Property State each spouse automatically owns 50% of the marital community's assets no matter what the title says. The only exception would be if an asset was acquired before marriage then it could be considered individual property unless altered by a Will or like document.

And in AZ if a private party (not a licensed dealer) sells a vehicle to you, you do not pay any sales tax on that transaction.

    Other states have different rules.

This is what i am saying by "double dipping" but i understand it is what it is. CA made an extra $1225 on the same vehicle for no reason other than the obvious.

    Purchase $ 7.5% Tax
    Original Buyer $20,000 $1,550
    Used Buyer #1 $8,300 $643
    Used Buyer #2 $5,000 $388
    Used Buyer #3 $2,500 $194
    $1,225

    Hi classicvw,

Re: Why would you need to add her to the title?

Now we are getting in subjective matters. 'Why' and 'need' were not a part of my question.

    Jerry Baumchen

PS) Back in '68, when I married my now former wife, I put her name on the car title; the car was the only thing I owned then in which something like this would be applicable to.

You will just LOVE the VAT tax (when we eventually get it).

    Default AAA does DMV services

Except for driver licenses, AAA will take care of just about everything DMV-related for free as part of your membership, and they are even nice about it!

CA is almost unique among states when you purchase a motor vehicle from out of state. Most of it has to do with their unique emissions regulations. For instance, one rule that used to be enforced (and perhaps still is) is a vehicle imported into CA from another state is considered, for emissions purposes, to be "new" if it has less than 7,500 miles on the ODO.

It is largely semantics but the taxes of which you speak are separate taxes, not additional sales taxes.

Want another example? Take a look at your house property tax statement. You will find a long list of special taxes (flood control district, all sorts of educational taxes, fire assessments etc.).
