something not right on what I'm reading?????????? two girls from our NISR (Nebraska Iowa Spyder Ryders) group were riding back from Spyderfest and broke the key off in the ignition on a stopover in Kansas City. they found a local locksmith who came to their hotel site and fixed/removed the broken key, made two new ones and off they went for home.

    Default Curious. ....🤔

In all this question is do the dealers program the keys for free. I have had several keys problem with the kids and though the blanks are easy enough to find and cut to match the programing for many were well over $100.00. Mind you these are auto dealers and the classier the car the more it will cost. Daughters Audi TT was $364.00... but did have all the remote stuff but still......

Making a new key to replace a broken key is simple enough. Cut a suitable blank. Cut the chip out of the broken key and insert or attach it to the new key. Done.

Making 2 new keys. That's a little different. Locksmith would likely have to make clones. 2013 and earlier easy enough. 2014 and later still should be able to do it. Very different equipement.

I believe I was the first to post on Spyderlovers that I made a clone key for my Spyder. Before that everyone said it could not be done. I think it is the same for 2014 and later. Just because no one has posted doing it. Does mean it can't be done.

My 2013 only had 1 key and the second key had to be laser cut and programmed by the dealer for a total cost of $150.00.

    Actually, it didn't...
For a 2013: you could have had a cloned copy made of your original for less than $25.

You are correct, but there is something to be said about having a spare original. My used 2013 came with only a single key. I had a new key programmed at the dealer, and then purchased a cheap clone. I travel with one of the programmed keys and the clone as a spare. The second programmed key stays at home in the event I lose the original master, since you can't get a new key programmed if all you have is a clone.

    202 & Gilbert.

I don't normally bash companies but these guys are infuriating! It took a week, one email and two phone calls to get a response that they had the key blank in stock. I get there today and it is a 2013 key - no workee on 2016. Had to special order the blank and wait a week to get it programmed and cut. They charged $133 for blank, cut and programming. I'm betting it takes less than 5 minutes of a tech's time to program the chip but they get 30 minutes full labor cost.

    This isn't rocket science!

They programmed it before it was cut? Not sure that can be done. The ignition needs to be turned on to program and I'm not sure you can read a second key while a different one is in the ignition.

Haven’t done the programming yet, the dealer said it had to be cut first to make sure it worked in the ignition switch. The quote was for $72 for the programming after I get it cut. Haven’t got around to doing the two step process of cutting the key and then going to the dealer for programming.

See if you can't schmooze the dealer into doing it for a lot less, or nothing. Tell him what a good appreciative customer you are, and promise to keep coming back! It only takes about 5 minutes. Put the key in, turn on the ignition, open BUDS on the laptop, find the key code in the list, and check it in! My dealer did it at no charge with the bike outside in the parking lot!

Got the new key from the dealer, had it cut at a local locksmith then took it to the dealer for programming. Three hours later after no success at trying to program it, they determined that the parts department had ordered the wrong key. Looked just like mine but was for the 2013 and older model. Waiting on a new key to come in and do the drill all over again. Not happy with the dealer right now, Mountain Motorsports of Marietta.

They keys look identical except the 2014 and later keys have a small dot stamped on the side of the blade.
