    Default What to buy

Wanting to get opinions on what to purchase for my wife. She has ridden a 15 rts and really liked it. I really don't think she will ride 1500 miles per year tops so I don't want to jump off on a 25k purchase. I can do a low mile 12 for 13,500 or low mile 15 limited for 18,000. or a new leftover 16 rts for $22,600. I really like the st but damn those have a bad rep. I can do those in the 10k range

We really can't tell you what to buy: you've got to keep your Best-Half happy, and that's all that should matter...
But if it was me: I'd be looking for some sort of RT with the 1330 under the hood!

I have ridden both but not back to back. I like the torque of the 1330 but is the bike that much better?

    Yes; it is...
A bit of a history lesson for you...
When the RT line-up was introduced in 2010: folks were talking about them in here like crazy!
    "What do you like?"
    "What don't you like?"
    What needs to be changed?"
For years: the answers were pretty consistent...
    They needed:
    More power
    More range
    More gears
    More charging capacity
    And folks complained about:
High amounts of heat on the rider's right foot
High rpm levels at cruising speeds. (4,000 rpm at 55 mph, and 5,000 at 70 mph)
There were also issues with toasted clutch plates due to NOT keeping the revs high enough.

In 2014: BRP proved that they were listening to us!
We got the 1330 triple: 15% more horsepower, and 20% more torque
A 1200 watt alternator replaced the 650 watt magneto
Twin radiators were mounted more forward, and would blow air AWAY from the rider when stopped
The clutch engagement system went to a hydraulic design that solidly locks up at 1800 rpm
The six speed transmissions dropped the operating rpm levels by wll over 1000 rpm

The bikes were faster, ran cooler, got way better fuel mileage, and were much more relaxing to ride!
So while the 998 bikes lit the fires: the 1330 bikes stoked them up to a white hot level!

    Default Choices, choices

In the end...test rydes, budgets will decide for you but it looks like the party to make happy needs to make that decision or that yearly mileage will drop drastically... good luck and enjoy the shopping....

If your wife isn't going to ride that much why don't you look at an F3. You get all the benefits of the 1330 motor without the cost of the RT.

I have the F3T and it's not at the lower cost range, but maybe a base F3 would do. If it's in the right price range, I'm thinking she'll like it most of all . . . if they have the U-fit components set correctly for her.

One other point about the F3 that makes it a contender: the U-Fit system!

Mine is a 2015 RT-S (1330 triple) and my wife's is a 2012 RT Limited (998 twin) and we each like our ride better than the other. It's more fun to ride the twin because the engine behaves more like the two wheelers we've owned over the years (we still have two single trackers). For me, longer rides on the smoother and not so high revving triple is more enjoyable. For her, the higher revving twin suits her just fine.

The f3 looks decent but I really want bags. She is a junk collector. There is a several $$ to up fit a f3 to basic requirements. need big windshield, cruise, radio. A short trip is 20 miles that is town and back. She has spent too many miles on the back of a Goldwing and a Ultra classic. 13 st limited really appeals to me but I know the issues and the old motor.

when and if she needs them you can either put a luggage rack on it and a top trunk or a set of throw over bags or there are add on hard bags. My vote is still the base model F3 then add what you need as she expresses interest.

After having some personal experience now, my opinion is NO.

The "old" models have plenty of power for the situation at hand.

My only complaint with my '11 RTs so far is the gas mileage.......and the way the gauge works it makes it look even worse than it is.

Got mine for $12K. Excellent buy.

There's far more to the 1330s, than just more power...
Clutches don't toast due to slippage
    There's loads more charging capacity
    The bikes run cooler
They run at lower rpm levels
The analog gauges are FAR more accurate
And they get better fuel economy.

    I had a 998, and I loved it!
But the 1330s are a vast improvement!
