RPMs at Idol

2009 SE5 does the very same thing bangs, chunks into first. Hope this is normal.

It is computer controlled and cannot be changed (at this time). I suspect that the idle is high (comparatively) to ensure adequate magneto output to the electrical system.

There are other bikes that are just as high, BTW.

Yeah mine does the same thing, I know what you mean.. I don't mind the idle so much its the BANG you hear once you put it in FIRST gear, that alarms me more then the HIGH idle.. I would think that if the computer would read a lesser RPM the BANG would then be eliminated, but again adequate magneto output wouldn't be right so I guess we all have to live the way it hits HARD in First Gear anyway..

For SM5s: Option... when driving, downshift into first before you stop... leave in first with the clutch in... at stop signs and lights... so you can "escape" if needed.

For SM5s: If just starting out from parking, start in first gear with clutch in.

Other than that, keep on "banging".

You shouldn't be in neutral at a stop sign for the exact reason you state - but I must admit that I do sometimes on really long lights.

Someone used to make a clutch holder years ago that you could flip on to hold the clutch in so you could rest your hand while at stoplights. Not sure if such a device is still around.

And yes- the 1400 RPMS at idle is perfectly normal for the Rotax. No need to change it. Just like the Rotax likes to warm up 2-3 bars before putting any load on it. I never take off before getting 2 bars.

I leave the bike in first at a light unless as someone else noted, I've been riding forever and need to stretch a bit...

As far as the idling goes, I'm around 1400 too...never worry about it...the bike shifts just fine...

For Scotty - Know what you mean re BMW "banging" into first gear. I had a 1966 R69S that really clunked! Great bike, though. Taught me a lot about motorcycle mechanics. I even learned how to adjust twin leading shoe brakes!

Yep, nothing like an airhead for encouraging you to learn motorcycle mechanics. They also teach you to ignore the clunks, whistles, and whines until they change in intensity or pitch. All my Beemers, from the 1961 to the 2000 are noisy going into first gear. The way the "R" bikes smoke until they warm up is another strange habit. They all do it from time to time.
