Wanna be
I'm looking to purchase a used spider but I have heard that there were some years and models that have had problems.
Does anyone know what those years and models are?
thanks

Like any mechanical device there are almost assuredly issues.
I believe that the 2012 models had some serious issues with gas caps, resolved with replacement.
The 2013 RT had an issue with heat management, I think that there were four of them that caught fire, this was resolved by a retrofit from BRP that worked very well.
Some of the 2014 and 2015 models had an issues with a DESS code that would lock you out of the bike completely, after a tow and some changes in the progrem it was fixed.
Having said all of that, you have no worries if you get the VIN and check with BRP to see if the changes were done, if so go for it.
Though you will still hear folks on this site tell you that the '13's are a scorching hot death trap, NOT TRUE. The will tell you that they had the DESS error, the tow and three attempts to fix it and no way run totally paranoid about going more then 50 miles.
Check the forums section under Fo Sale or WTB and you will find some good bykes.

Find the best deal....
There was only one year with major problems but again not all of them. BRP made the nessesary changes and all is good with the models out there today. You can and should check with the vin# to see all changes and updates were made to any one you find but as always the newer with low mileage is your best choice. Most spyders out there have been well taken care of and you will do well with any of them....happy hunting/shopping..

Bob D. gives about the best description covering all the years.
I have owned two GS/RS with the 998 engines. 2008 and 2009.
Have owned three RT's. Two with the 998 and one with the 1330. 2010, 2011, and 2014. Total of over 130,000 Spyder miles.
No F3's. None have been problematic for me. I prefer the 1330 to the two cylinder. Better gas mileage (10+) per gallon, quieter, more torque, and longer service intervals.
There have been some mfg. glitches, but they also seem to be mostly solved at this time. A history of the VIN on any machine you purchase will tell you if you have a good one or not.
Let us know what you decide.
Currently Owned: 2019 F3 Limited, 2020 F3 Limited: SOLD BOTH LIMITEDS in October of 2023.
Previously : 2008 GS-SM5 (silver), 2009 RS-SE5 (red), 2010 RT-S Premier Editon #474 (black) 2011 RT A&C SE5 (magnesium) 2014 RTS-SE6 (yellow)
MY FINAL TALLY: 7 Spyders, 15 years, 205,500 miles
IT HAS BEEN A LONG, WONDERFUL, AND FUN RIDE.

Heart breaker
Watching your Spyder burn down to the axles would be a heart breaker for sure.
