Motorcycle campers and the RT

If I want to go to the blue mountain campgrounds near Asheville north Carolina they only have four rustic cabins for rent everyone else is camping no cars pick ups DVD etc are allowed in the campground motorcycles only

The Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais, has several motel/lodges all the way out to Gunflint Lake. Gunflint Trail provides access routes (by canoe and portaging) to many of the MN/Canada Border Lakes. Also many nice tent camping grounds within a few miles of the Gunflint Trail.

Clearwater Lake will take you to the steep portage that leads to Mountain Lake (the Canadian Border line runs E/W through the middle of the lake). We were dressed in our usual khaki/green camping clothes. When we put in at Mountain Lake, most of the people that were fishing on the American side--suddenly started paddling to the Canadian side. Apparently on the American side for the better fishing. They thought we were wilderness Park Rangers I am guessing.

Speaking of Las Cruces One time I left Clayton New Mexico and drove to Springer that's 89 miles with nothing in between my gold wing would never make it the wife tells me the spider can do about 200 without a trailer

Pulled a Bunkhouse with my Harley Ultra and itpulled just fine. I would think even easier with an RT.

I'm sure all of those trailers have been towed and a bunch more not mentioned ..... IMHO it's not how MUCH the Spyder can tow ( I actually pulled my Toyt Echo 3100 lbs about 25 ft when I testing a home made hitch with my Syder ) It's how much you can SAFELY STOP WITH , is the real issue. I'm 69 years old and have moved a trailer that weighed 1600lbs by hand. If you could fix up a workable electric brake for the trailer ...... 600 lb would be doable ........ Mike

I added brakes to the trailer. and working on getting it all integrated with the bike, so no road test information yet.
Weight for camper and trailer is just less than 400lbs, have kept tongue weight under 40lbs,

Currently pulling a Roll-a-Home with my 2017 RTS. Over 20,000 miles on the Spyder. Most of it with the trailer. This is my 3rd camper with a total of over 80,000 miles. Just be aware of the need to stop.

How did you get the weight so low? On their website they list the weight as 1250Lbs. Also what do you do for a dressing room?

I tow a bunkhouse with a 2014 RT 1330. I have towed all over from home in Michigan to and through Colorado, Utah, and Nova Scotia. I have a little over 18,000 miles in two riding seasons and over 10,000 was towing that trailer.

Glade to see your picture of the Bunkhouse with the front fly attaching in the middle. That is the same vintage as mine. That started in 1998. That's when they stared the added room. I pulled mine with an 85 Gold wing and it did fine but I never went over 65. Pulled great. Been pulling it with a 2009 Victory Vision since 2011. Just past 65 and it want's to fish tail. The two aero dynamics don't match. Going to start pulling with a 2013 RTL-SE5. Hope it pulls as good as yours, sound like. Got big plans in story with the 2013 RTL. It's been a great camper so far. Bought it in the Winter of 1997 at Detroit Auto Show. Picked it up at the plant in Deerfield IL in Spring of 1998. Got the extra Room in fall of 1998. Hope you are doing well.

Fishtailing as speed increases is mostly cause by not enough tongue weight to trailer weight ratio. Not aero dynamics.

I've pulled my 'tent on a trailer' several thousand miles. It weighs on the order of 400 to 450 lbs. As others have said, stopping is primary concern. I can tell when it's attached when it comes to stopping. What others haven't mentioned, and it's a big difference from your 1800, is power at interstate speeds. At 70+ pulling 400# you will not have the reserve torque to pass a semi like you had with the 1800. Gas mileage will take a hit, especially if the trailer isn't aerodynamic. If you're thinking about pulling 500# plus, and you get into a headwind going uphill, and want to travel 70+, you very well may get frustrated. Plan to do a lot of driving in 5th gear, and maybe even 4th. Cruising on the level with no headwind you'll do fine in 6th.

If I was going to pull a trailer heavier than the one we have I would definitely have the ECU Flashed, air box opened up, Exhaust modified for the extra power.

Not sure where you were looking, the website lists the CLC camper at 250lbs fully loaded, that is with camping gear and such. Just the camper weighs in at less than 200lbs.
