Default OK lets have a nice talk about guns

i have a female friend on face book that hates guns. she posted something about a MIT student who almost perfected a SMART GUN that reads a finger print pretty fast. now i don't have a carry permit, nor would i ever be able to get one here in NYC. but i do have guns for home and personal protection if someone ever brakes into my house.

FOR THIS reason i think a SMART GUN would be a good idea. it would stop people from stealing them, to a point, and also stop kids from getting hurt or killed if the find the gun in the house. LIKE ANYTHING ELSE, i am sure someone would come out with a way to beat the smart technology, but it would be a start.

SO WHAT IS YOUR FEELINGS ON SMART GUNS, and them being sold to use

The thinking is that the gun may not work properly when you need it the most? Sweaty palms or in that you have to wear a device to activate the gun, it may go dead thus a useless gun?
The technology is not there yet. The reasons you pointed out are good ones for such weapons.
What are the chances that law enforcement will have such weapons?

I wouldn't have one. Keep your firearms locked up when not in use. I have two places to lock up items and pistols in my vehicle, CYA!

The technology needs to be perfected first.
And part of that may just be a fingerprint operated switch, that either disables the firearm completely, makes it useable only by the registered owner, or unlocks it for anyone's use.
After all: what if you took it to a gunsmith, and they couldn't test-fire it?
Or what if you wanted to let somebody try it out, and they couldn't fire it?

For the same reasons that the military would not use this is the same reason I never would. I need it to work, at very quick response time. I dont want to have to push anything to get it to work. The last thing we need to get to a point that you have to press Ctl-Alt-Del to put the weapon in battery.

Technology is a tool and I dont think it belongs on guns, as far as firings them.

Just like the GPS I used in Iraq and Afghanistan. The batteries always died at the worst time, or the damn thing couldnt pick up a satelite standing in the middle of the desert or top of a mountain.

Had to use good ole land nav. Compass and a topo map.

What if I cut my finger? Will the gun still work? If it's cold out, am I supposed to tell the SOB whose trying to rob me to hold on so I can take my glove off? And how much is this going to add to the cost of the firearm?

    Nope, not liking it.

I don't think I want to trust my life on something that might not work.. I know for sure .. my guns will protect my life and my family's life if the occasion ever arises

They're not ever going to be able to improve upon the Colt 1911 A-1 anyway! (IMHO)

My concern is that "Big Brother" (the Government) will be able to disable them at a whim.

I believe the "smart" thing to do would be to return firearms training to the education system so that every child knows how to handle, and not handle, weapons.

We took NRA's Eddie Eagle program into our local Elementary School... once!
While we had some very positive feedback from the Principal and Teachers; parental concerns made it impossible to continue.
They would rather that their children remain ignorant about firearms safety.

For the Record: the main point of the program for young children to remember, if they find a gun:
"Stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult"

    1. Always keep it pointed in a safe direction
"Safe"; being defined as the direction that would result in the least damage, should an unintended discharge occur.
    2. Never point it, at anything that you wouldn't want to shoot.
    3. Keep your trigger finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard; until you're ready to shoot.

Today a police officer out by I10 and exit 94 Tonopaw was shot. He was then beaten with a pipe. A passerby stopped walked up to the officer and asked did he need help. Officer replied yes. Passerby went back to their vehicle got the gun walked up to suspect and shot him dead. Yes he was still beating the cop he had shot. I am so glad the passerby killed the proposed criminal. I don't have to feed and clothe nor provide medical care for him.

I think that if there is a market for them manufacturers will provide them. I would never buy one though. I have an LG phone that uses fingerprints to unlock. You can add more than one fingerprint in the settings, but it is not 100% accurate. It stopped working for one hand and if I am in the working in the shop with gloves on I have to touch (and get rejected) the button about 4 times then it brings up a screen to type a PIN.

I want all my tools to work properly when I need them. I prefer weapons that embody the KISS principle.
