This great story has been given to us in five separate variations over the years:
1938: starring Reginald Owen, as Scrooge
1951: starring Alastair Sim
1984: starring George C Scott
1999: starring Patrick Stewart
2009: starring Jim Carrey

My question:
Which version is your favorite, and why?

(Note: I didn't include the Mr. Magoo version (1962) intentionally! )

A great subject for this time of year.

Last night, I watched the Patrick Stewart version because that was the offering on TV.

I am a fan of Charles Dickens and so I prefer the older versions in black & white. They seem to capture more of the "Old London" feeling.

I own a VHS copy of the Reginald Owen version and usually watch it on Christmas Eve. It is only about an hour long, so that works well.

In order, I prefer

Alistair Sim
Reginald Owen
Patrick Stewart
George C. Scott. He was a better Scrooge than I thought he would be.

I have never watched the Jim Carry version. Have seen the Grinch and have mixed feelings about that one.

George C Scott - Patton as Scrooge- hard to beat

Alistair Sim, the best by far.
Reginald Owen is a distant second, but belongs on the list.
The others are crap.

I'm seeing an awful lot of Alastair Sim fans... do you also like the 1951 version the best, or just his portrayal of the lead character?

I liked him the best, but still narrowly prefer the 1999 version of the story. It might just have a lot to do with the abilities of the "special effects wizards"...

I like 1951 movie quite a bit and until AMC revived the 1938 (years ago when it really was a classic movie channel) version it was all I knew. I thought George actually made me forget he had been Patton. I thought Patrick Stewart was just too wooden in his role. I kept waiting for a "Make it so" from him.

The '84 version. George C Scott plays a realistic, believable, Scrooge. I have it on DVD and watch it each season.

There is a version of Scrooge with Albert Finney that was released in 1970. My Dad and Step Mother watched that version every Christmas Eve night. Dad passed away in 2009.

Yes: Mr. Finney did play the role of Scrooge...
But that was also the name of the movie. "Scrooge"

I seem to recall a made for TV version staring Henry Winkler. I don't remember the title.

As a George C Scott fan I think this is true of almost all the movies he was in.
