I have never understood the need to apply pressure to the idler pulley. I set mine to barely clear the belt when not on bike.
I have close to 20 thousand miles on my BRP idler and have no complaints...

Mine did not come from a perfect world - when new and not lubed I fought it many times.
Lube it (I use waterproof plumbers grease) and turn the key as Ann suggests - absolutely no problems since !
