What are the thoughts on using 10w-40 oil in the RTL?? I know it calls for 5-40, but I have a pretty good supply of 10-40 left over from my Wing days. Clutch probs maybe?? How about mixing the two?? Anyway, thanks for your replies.

It's soooooo close to 5w 40 I wouldn't be concerned.... The only reason you would encounter " clutch " problems would be if your Spyder has the V_TWIN engine ….. they say don't use oil rated for SM …… Mike :ohyea:
If the 10w-40 meets the other requirements. It is actually a better weight than the 5w-40 for the Spyder, in my opinion. BRP used to recommend 10w-40 for the Spyder. Then they consolidated their rather extensive lubricant line down to a few weights. I think it is more a matter of selling what you have than selling what is ideal. I'd use the 10w-40 with zero worries.
Just got my 2012 and the prior owner had 1/2 quart BRP summer oil.
What weight is this and what can I use to replace it with?

The important thing to check -- in your operator's guide -- is the API service codes that are specified for your Spyder. In the case of the 2012, DO NOT use oil meeting API service code SM or ILSAC code GF4 because it will cause clutch slippage.
BRP has rescinded this requirement. The XPS oil they now sell for the 998s is SM rated. Oil does need to meet JASO MA2 wet clutch requirements however.Quote:

Thanks for the replies. I didnt think it was an issue, but it never hurts to ask. I have five gallons of10w-40 left over from my wing and I intend to use them. Thanks again..........
:coffee: The 10w-40 is my personal favorite. Just make sure it meets the Spyder specs.....:thumbup:
I use 10w40 in my F3 BUT it should be Jaso MA2 Rated . Is your Wing Oil Jaso rated? Preferably MA2.
