Vibration Start-up in Reverse

Hello I’ve searched the threads on this issue my wife’s 2014 ST on start-up if you move it right away it will vibrate and clatter. I’ve seen and read they may be cold blooded but I just recently changed the oil and put Amsoil 10-40 full synthetic and BajaRon filter kit. I check the level after every ride but I can’t remember and neither does she if it did this prior to the oil change. Has anyone who has had this issue figured it out? I was thinking of changing the oil and filters and putting BRP oil back in

It's normal until the oil gets hot. My 2014 has always done it no matter what kind of oil was in it.

Wasn't there a Bulletin of some sort sent to all Dealers about this particular 'issue'?! Not sure if it was a Technical Service Bulletin or just an Advisory Bulletin, but I'm pretty sure that basically it just said, 'If you have any Customers who are concerned about this, tell them to let their Spyder idle a bit longer until it's warmed up a little more'.... Well, the words were to that effect anyway!! :lecturef_smilie:

Regardless, I really don't think it's worth changing back to the BRP labelled Oil & filters.... they aren't anything spectacular or rare, and if the full synthetic Amsoil Oil has the correct JASO rating or whatever type of Grading & it meets or exceeds the viscosity requirements specified for your Spyder, then there really isn't likely to be any significant benefit arising from reverting to a lesser blend, regardless of what label is stuck on the container!! They all do it to some degree as you engage first or reverse & try to ryde off before the oil is properly warm. :shocked:

Probably best just to Ryde More, and Worry Less! :thumbup:

As mentioned above, give the engine a bit more time to circulate the oil. Clutch plates can do this depending on how hot the engine was when last shut down and how much oil drained away and how fast. You may find this to be differend depending on the weather but untill the oil gets between the plates once again they may be dry and will not engage smoothly. :thumbup:

As we all know the Se clutches tend to not fully engage untill they reach 4000 rpms do sometimes revving the engine up past that will help the plates get wet sooner....

I owned and drove a 2013 STL for 5 years. It shuddered on take off after sitting overnight since day one, until I traded it in. Just the nature of the beast. Letting warm up first is just a waste of effort and fuel. There was little to no improvement in doing that.

I will repeat advice given above. Drive more, worry less.

As others have said, always judders a little bit when you first take off when cold.
Once everything is fully warmed up, the judder goes away.
You'll never warm the transmission by idling.

I have the same problem with my 2013. I read somewhere that in 2013 and beyond the clutch components were changed and this is a continuing problem. I have had some advise and found that if I warm up with rpms above 3000 it goes away quicker. That causes the oil to penetrate quicker. Works for me.

I just let mine run for about 3 minutes to get the oil warmed up and that reduces it considerably.

We are new to the Spyder world and purchased a couple of used units in the past few weeks. My wife's 2014 STL se5 does the same thing as mentioned here. My 2013 STS se5 doesn't have an issue. Taking it to the dealer next week to have checked out. Will post the results.

I would be concerned about the STS that doesn't do it. The shudder is normal.

Dealer has diagnosed the issue to be a warped clutch plate. Waiting on Can Am to confirm warranty repair.

Keep us posted on if this goes away after the repair

Just saw this thread, my 13 STS does it also. Gone after a couple minutes of warm up.

Hard to believe BRP would cover this if it’s normal in a 1000 bikes.

Turns out in addition to the vibration there is also a small oil leak in the engine. Now waiting on parts from BRP. The dealer is telling me that the clutch may be included in this as well, If not they will address it with BRP separately. I'm a bit confused as to how this all works but will provide an update once the repair is done and I have a chance to test the unit. Likely not till next spring :(

just got the bike back. new shortblock as well as clutch rebuild. All seems good so far but I won't get a good test run till spring.

Here's the TSB regarding this.

The issue I was having isn't the same in severity as most riders have experienced and is not covered by the TSB. With the clutch plates being warped the shudder was extreme to the point that BRP agreed they needed to replace the clutch. I'm happy to say the issue is now resolved and any shudder still there would be considered normal. Thanks to the BRP dealer for diagnosing and making the repair under warranty. Thank you to the well meaning posts trying to put my mind at ease by re-iterating the issue I was having was considered normal. In my case however the situation was not normal and definitely required repair....
