I was a Conditional Class. WA5JLO When my boys got old enough to ride dirt bikes, seemed like I never had time to operate my rig anymore. Let my license expire some time ago and never renewed. It's too late to renew now without taking a test and I've forgotten too much to ever pass a test now.

My father is an extra class KS5A. Don't think they even have those anymore? He mainly does county hunting in morse code.

I too am interested to find out if others have mounted a ham radio on their Spyder. I hope to make the purchase on an RT this month. I am a Technician class, the call is N4RFX. The radio installation is one of the few mods I am interested in. If anyone has succeeded in getting a radio on the Spyder I'd be interested in the radio make and model, antenna and a "How to" on getting it installed.

Take a look at the link below. There are quite a few places around OK. You can search by zip code as well.

HI from N0HA
Thought I might try mounting and older Icom dual bander that has a
detachale head and put the main body of the radio in the trunk. I think a
mount for the head much like I see pictures here of mounted GPS's. Then
a simple 1/2 wave antenna on front or back. Not a lot of room on an RS.
Putting a Ham radio on a Spyder might be fun, but you have to power it somehow. The RT-S only puts out 600 Watts, and you have to run the bike on that to.
well got ham on rt-s. 1. had to up the 600 to 950 rect, that was best part. bmw works great in it place. 2. antennae is in the hole where cb should go. yes i have the cb in stall but only use it for the head set.but move the antenna to the back by lic plate holder. it to works great. 3 head sits in on top of dash 3. mic ties in to sound system via xm radio side ,made plug for it and works great.4. lots of time doing it, 5. had all side off and thats takes time really lots of time.6 Does it work??? yes.. works great on my mars system to. and cad side and sat side so now ,cant talk all day no drops win driving around. will put up vidos soon once i cut it down some.....3 weeks of work and vidos to. so now have find where to put my keyer on??? owell .. se ya all on the road soon when rain stops...:clap:
firstshirt,
kd7jwe, i am going to mount mine on handle bars. Don't use it much so i will not mount it permently.
yes 600w but you put in isolator for 2 battry small on in left box and works great. brp dose have a 630w iam putting in to day to see how it will work. but on my bww police bike we have battreis and works great to. will see when done . right now all works great when stop for 12 hours can talk and no draine on main bat.

N7khh. I have been thinking it through. Audio/mic to helmet seems the bigest challenge.

I've got a Yaesu FTM-10R dual band VHF/UHF rig to install. Just need he time to get to it. It uses bluetooth, so I plan on interfacing it with my Scala G9s. Control hea is really small an I will put in the factory GPS location an the main radio under the seat.

KC5EDK, Never thought about operating on the Spyder. Now would be a good reason to drag the trailer all the time. It can carry extra PS and mount my Halo. I have not seen a bugcatcher mounted yet:roflblack:.
I had the same question.
I am wondering if there is someway to either disconnect or A/B the CB and somehow wire my ham radio so I can use the PTT button and talk and listen through my Helmet Mic and Speakers.
I have a 2010 RT-S with the ICOM system and I am hard wired to the bike using the J&M Headset and adapter cable.

KG5CFK Just got my 2012 RT yesterday. I would like to just mount my handheld beofong and be done with it.
I've got 2 of the same rig, FTM-10R, I got specifically for my bikes, I just haven't taken the time to mount them. I am trying to decide how and which antenna to mount. Around here most folks stay on 2 meter, so my antenna choices will primarily be for those frequencies, I've also got the bluetooth installed on one of them, so intercom won't be a problem, either. I'm thinking of running the main unit in the trunk, or saddlebag, and run the extension under the seat to the glove box with the head mounted inside, for security. Not sure whether I want to run it full time hot, or turned off with the ignition.
I couldn't have chosen a better callsign than the one the FCC assigned to me, being a retired Army medic, if you take the region number out of my call it becomes KILL U, KI4LLU, how cool is that, lol.
I'll be watching this thread to find out the antenna choices y'all come up with.
