On my 18 F3L. Do I need to drain the engine oil before changing it. Or is the oil level not that high. And if I do not need to change the oil, do you loose some oil when changing it.

I always drain the oil first. Much less messy! It holds some oil, and even after draining, some drains out. You could raise the right side on a ramp, and just do the filter, but, I’ve not tried it. I did replace a clutch on a VROD, leaning the bike over. That was because the owner did not bring oil! It worked, but it really is easier to drain, replace the filters, then refill. If you try, post up! Joe
Yes, like cptjam states, drain the engine oil first.
Dang Jerry .. You've been riding :)
I don't know your oil change sequence but why not wait until your next oil change to attack the trans filter. After all, it's just a chunk catcher. Mine was so clean I saved it and may use it again. Once you see it you'll know what I mean. JMHO but the cover should be made out of "see-through" material so you can visually check it. IE, don't change it until something gets caught in it. 28K change is just a suggestion. You could change it at 20k or 35K it doesn't really matter unless BURP left a set screw rolling around in there somewhere. Come to think of it, maybe that's why that filter is there.
nojoke :yikes: :roflblack
Ok. I'm going to do my oil change and Trans filter this weekend. Do I need to remove the right driver floorboard to get the Trans filter off. My floorboards are in the position #3.
If the F3 frame is the same as the RT the bottom screw is hard to get at. Get a set of small bits and a small ratchet from HF and you can get into that screw easily to get it out. Otherwise, it's B*^%H!
The tranny filter on an F3 is out there for all the world to see. Easy Peasy to access.
