Your owners manual is velcroed to the battery access door.
Unless you didn't really mean what you wrote you don't need to use a "battery cable" to connect a charger. Buy any of the well regarded charger/maintainers such as NAPA, Battery Tender, DieHard, etc. and they will come with a pigtail with ring terminals that you connect to the battery. They are probably about 12 or 14 gauge, much smaller than a typical battery cable.
That is what I meant a pigtail with a SAE end connector on it for my battery tender. Have it on all of my other bikes.
Thanks
I wasn’t sure because some threads said the frunk and others under the seat. Different years, different locations I guess.
Exactly! ;) IIRC, all the 'up to & including' 2012 Spyders had their batteries under the seat; while all the 'from & including' 2013 Spyders had their batteries secured in a cradle in the front frame accessed by removing the frunk completely; or if you leave the frunk in situ, undo & pull the frunk liner forward, then take out the 2 screws securing the central cover in the rear wall of the frunk, & remove the cover to reveal the front of the battery. Bit tight in there, but the terminals are usually accessible. :ohyea:
While you're in there, it's a good idea to install star washers under the terminal fixings, especially if you need to undo/remove them - those terminal bolts aren't always tightened properly nor do they always stay tight, & the star washers help keep them tight and make sure they have a positive connection!
Good idea on the star washers. Sounds like it would be a pain to get to on the road if there was a starting problem.
Having intentionally let a battery I knew was going die on the road do so so that I could test my Rugged Geek jump start pack I can assure you that it is a no-brainer to get to the battery. One tip, when you install the pigtail be certain to orient the terminals vertically so that if you ever have to jump start it the jumper clamps can get a good grasp on the battery posts.
Do yourself a big favor and make a New Year's resolution to thoroughly read your operator's guide. There is a wealth of information in it.
Thanks for the info. Managed to run a pigtail into the frunk through the extra hole in the frunk to the battery and inside the frunk. Did not have to remove the battery and did put star washers on and tightened it down good. The battery connections were not real tight when i connected to them.
Thanks for the info.
can the SAE connector in the frunk (2019 RT Limited) be used for the battery maintainer? It was there when I bought it new.
thanks
Is it fused and connected directly to the battery? The SAE pigtail on my Battery Tender Jr included and installed by the dealer was fused to protect the electrical system.
I don't know JayBros, but I'll be checking. Response appreciated.
I finally spoke to the dealership. They installed the SAE plug directly to the battery and it has a 3amp fuse.
Thanks again.
Many dealers install them as a benefit of doing business with them, so yes, you are good to go.
I have the Lamonster powerplate, and the battery tender has a cigarette lighter like adapter, plug in and it is good to go. Of course I went out to move the Spyder the other day and it wouldn't start, learned quickly that I apparently hit the kill switch when putting on or taking off the cover that I put on the byke for the winter.
