Do you guys use any type of lubricant or preservative on the body panel grommets to keep them from drying out or getting brittle?

Interesting question. I would guess White Grease would work?

You don't want anything to slippery or you will have things popping loose. Armor all or WD40 works well I just spit on them and as long as they are not exposed have held up well...:dontknow:

Windex works well. It lubes the grommets, dries with no residue and does not hurt the rubber.

Here's what I have been using. So far so good, used to use it on the grommets on the goldwing

CAUTION ............. If you use grease, WD40 or any similar lubricant on the side panels ........................... you could lose them going down the Highway, I use Windex when putting panels back on to facilitate the reinstall, it dries without any consequence within a few minutes and does not leave the grommet slippery.

I learned this a long time ago from Spyderpops

Be careful using grease. I lost my left side cover (oil) because the grommets we slick. A new cover costs about $275. Use alcohol to lubricate the grommet when putting the cover on. It will dry quickly and hold the cover in place securely.

I use a lubricant that is designed for swimming pool fittings. It is not as slippery, but stays on the grommets from season to season, and is designed for rubber/plastics so it does not dry out the grommets like the alcohol content in Windex might.

Available at any swimming pool supplier and/or online.

DO NOT USE GREASE :banghead:

(Just wanted to be sure you could see this in case you didn't read the other replies about not using grease)

Spit is free. It's also great as a de-fogging agent for your dive mask...

I use spray White grease very little just to get the panels on..And the lube goes away and doesn't cause the panels to panels to blow off because I lubed the knubs a bit .:shocked:

Spit happens

:agree: Just use what you've already got floating around in your mouth: it'll also discourage theft; if somebody sees you doing that... :barf:

If you didn't see Ann's response the first time:

Some folks have attached the rubber grommets to their locations by using small zip-ties...

Personally, to preserve the rubber I would not use Windex or anything that contained ammonia or alcohol. Those chemical will hasten the demise of rubber compounds.

Then spit on them if you will. If you lose the panel it's $247,if your color is still available. I would rather replace a $7.95 grommet due to alcohol rot then an expensive panel due to slippery mounting.
