Has anyone made an auxiliary fuel tank for the spider to get a longer range? I'm going on a large trip across north western United States from Detroit Michigan with two other motorcycles a Honda Gold wing in a Yamaha tannery they both can go 250 miles on one tank where my spider RS can only go 150!!! 15 years ago I plumbed in a 5 gallon gas tank on a rack into my vent line on my snowmobile and that gave me an extra 75 mile range!has anyone attempted such a feat??

....Yes it has been done ..... It did cost around $400.00 , He lost almost all of the front trunk......So imho it wasn't worth it...BECAUSE.....If you are going on a LONG trip you probably have a trailer, because a STOCK RS only has the FRUNK ...... So take a gas can........If they are friends , they won't mind if have to get gas.............................Mike

If you search you may find the one Mike is talking about. Very nicely done and there have been others doing what you did on the snowmobile. I do some distance driving and find that a stop every 100 miles makes the trip much more enjoyable. A good stretch, gas and snack and back on the road. I do carry a liter fuel bottle just in case I push a bit to far....

You can also get a REDA portable gas can.

Or, as already said, you can get the 1330 ACE.

I'm not sure converting one of the storage compartments to fuel is such a good idea, but to each their own.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Well personally, IMHO, I like to stop and get off the bike about every 120 miles anyhow. Maybe cause I'm getting a little long in the tooth, but I feel refreshed, alert and ready to go again afterwards, and I usually have a drink and get hydrated while stopped. Still make lots of miles in a day.

I like to stretch it to 180 to 220 miles between stops...
The 1330 works perfectly for that scenario!

Also my feelings exactly. Need to get off, stretch, rejuvenate, potty stop, etc. every 100 miles or so. The days of 250 mile plus stops on a ride are long gone for me.

Reminds me of the days when I traveled the canoe country. We would see groups of kayakers whizzing by us so they could make the next bunch of lakes as quick as possible. IMO, they missed all the scenery, the opportunity to catch a "big one," and the ambience of camping on your very own private lake. Their loss, my gain.

:agree: Even though the Spyder has the legs I prefer to stop more frequently to stay fresh for my own safety. That's not to say I don't get a touch of "gethomeitis" on the return from Spyderfest. Gethomeitis years ago was ranked as the number one cause of naval aviation accidents and may still be so.

As shown above there are few ways people gave added spare gas. Im looking at
http://www.tourtank.com myself. I just need few more parts (BRP sports rack). For the way i want to mount it. Here is a pic of a fuel cell some one posted on a similar thread135748 135749135750 i think the tour-tank(like seen here on my buds VTX)or fuel cell is better external option as getting more miles you will want to tour & carry more stuff. Of course a spare can like a rotopax or 135752 whatever if you got the room. The person i got my my tank from said they simply drilled the gas cap & had a gravity feed line run to it. Im wanthing to try something more secure & proper

I use the trailer hitch brackets to make a platform for the fuel cell. Electric fuel pump to pump it up to the fuel cap. VW fuel caps will work in a Spyder RT. I drilled a hole in the fuel cap and run the fuel line into it.

We were riding in southern Utah today, my wife's 2012 RT went 185 miles on 5 1/2 gallons of gas. Our friends RS took 4.55 gallons for the same miles, so there is some range there. We carry a Reda 1 gallon can with us.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160813/d4edc0a91b0a931b520d928ec7a1334e.jpg

Yes, I've ridden my share of 1330's - mostly RT's, but also F3's (including one fairly long ride on an F3T). They are good bikes, but as of yet, I haven't found one that makes me want to trade in my 2013 RT Ltd. nojoke

And as for being stubborn... It does have it's advantages. For one thing, I always know what I'll be thinking tomorrow. ;)

I am not about to lose my Fronk as you noted I need all my storage my friends and I stop at all the states signs for a photo op I'll dump my gasin then and then yes they will stop when I need gas but knowing I have a couple gallons on the backseat strapdown I will push the range a little further than I usually do! I would love to buy the ace 1330 but can't say I care for the F3 styling and I'm not old enough for an RT! See all of you in Valcourt Qc next year when they pull the sheets off the 2018 the tilting RSS should be the new model next year a beautiful little three wheel crotch rocket that will take corners faster than any vehicle ever made! Never cared for the V-twin too much vibration too hard on gas that triple must be just stellar!!

Somebody posted a neat little emergency tank that bolted to the bottom of the left side case. Think it held 2 liters of fuel and was double sealed. Looked kinda like a red fire extinguisher from the back. I thought about getting one and then made a carry spot on our trailer for an extra gallon. In all that time I never have had to use it. One time I went a little long, fuel light came on and not stations for 30 miles. That was just a little sketchy....... Wife kept hitting me in the back saying, "You idiot!" hahahaha

Same here!!

Since the heat recall thing happened, the Missus & I have done similar extensive testing & still reckon the 2013's RT's are the pick of the bunch for us; we've yet to find a 1330 offering that ticks all our 'needs' list boxes or does anywhere as well in satisfying the 'wants' list!! And while some of the F3's come close in the 'getting the adrenalin pumping' stakes, they all either fail miserably elsewhere or just don't work - for us!! I have been known to state that the 1330's (yes, even the F3's!) just aren't as 'exciting' to ride - sure, they've got scads of torque & can be fun, but it seems their torque is delivered by a lazy team of oxen & they just don't deliver the rush we get from our heat recall & cat elim unleashed 2013 RT Ltd!:ohyea:

Towing with a 1330 RT is admittedly a breeze & cruising can be a joy, but regardless of what you do, even without a trailer you just don't get the rush of mid range acceleration from one of them as you do from a 998 with a cat elim fitted - the cat elim & the heat recall mods really seem to have unleashed the mid range in our 2013 RT Ltd such that now, the only thing that's less than ideal with the Spyder for us is the disappointing range! I wonder if it's possible to somehow squeeze the larger 1330/'2014 on' RT Fuel Tank under the 2013 tupperware?? Until someone comes up with a way to do that, or something similarly invisible & seamless, then it appears that we will have to keep on sacrificing 1/2 of the LH pannier capacity to carry a spare 5litre gas can 'range extender'! :sour:

Altho, when exactly did BRP say they were going to be releasing that 1330 turbo?? My hand's already up & waving madly for an RT Turbo with Sports mode - an F3T Daytona Turbo or two will do in a pinch, but we are really after a sporty & exciting but comfortable two-up Long Distance Tourer! Is it so hard to deliver something that's as comfortable, capable, & versatile as the current RT's, but has more exciting performance than the current 1330's, with the Sports Mode Option so we can let'er rip when we want to play, but still has the fuel capacity let us easily pull those long cruising stints?! A 1330 RT Turbo with Sports Mode looks like it might come close, anyone else interested?? :2thumbs:

YEP.:agree: ...or the sound of the cat-less 2013 RT, which I also enjoy.. Then factor in a low trade value, and loads of expensive farkles, and I really have no incentive at all to "trade up". http://robmorgan.net/img-sm/unsure.png If I did, I wouldn't be as happy, because it just wouldn't be the Spyder that I've grown so fond of, and enjoy riding so much. nojoke

Hi robmorg,

Re: it just wouldn't be the Spyder that I've grown so fond of, and enjoy riding so much.

Not to hijack the thread, but I agree completely with this as regards my '08. I've made a fair number of changes ( a few more in a week or so ) and I have it just about how I want it.

Jerry Baumchen

PS) Back in the 50's when I was a mid-teenager, I hung around with a bunch of older 'car guys.' They kept doing 'whatever' to get more power out of their cars. But, there was always someone out there who was faster. I learned the lesson to simply enjoy what you have; there will always be someone with more HP.

Fuel range is why I ended up with Givi Panniers on my RS:

135817

Have 12 litres in this one - normally have another 0.5 litre bottle, my multi-fuel stove, billy can and tire kit go in this side as well.

It's not the small range but also when touring on unfamiliar roads you end up filling up even more often just to be safe. When I'm doing endurance rally's I often have to spend more time working out where I have to re-fuel than anything else.

Like others I've tried an F3 1330 but agree Peter that the power delivery is all wrong for me. It's possibly not helped by the different sprocket sizes we apparently have in NZ/Australia vs the US. I did hear a rumor that Can-Am Australia are looking at altering the mapping for 2nd gear for the 1330 to try and improve the power delivery for our market.

Unfortunately there is no place to add a aux. fuel cell anywhere under the tupperware so any extra fuel has to be carried either in a storage compartment or somewhere on the surface of the bike. I have the 1330 but there are occasions when I have stretched the ride to far and I start to worry. When I have the trailer I carry 2.5 gallons in a fuel container, if not, I put 1 gallon in my left saddle bag, this leaves about 1/2 of the bag still usable for storage.

Now, this is a manual fill so I keep it for emergency's only and carrying extra fuel in a plastic container is risky in the event of an accident. A proper metal fuel cell can be mounted up on my luggage rack and it could be plumbed into the fuel system. The tour tank is probably the safest set up but they are a bit pricey.
