My undying thanks to the persons who posted awhile back about getting into the trunk when you have locked the key in there :banghead:

Now I've done it!

I was out on a lonely desert highway when I stopped to look at an old ranch. I put my helmet in the trunk of the Spyder and walked across the street. When I returned to the bike the key was not in the ignition or in my pocket - pause for a moment of panic here.

After I determined that the key had to be in the trunk I remembered a posting about gaining access through a side panel but that is all I could remember (OK, OK, I'm 74, no memory jokes please). I assumed the side panel in question would have to be the quick release oil access panel on the left side. I opened it and tried to reach anything that felt like the trunk release but no luck there.

While looking in the opening, wondering what to do next, I noticed a cable that looks like a throttle or brake cable running through the area. Now a glimmer of memory returning; I remember something being posted about pulling on a cable to release the latch. So I felt around for the cable and pulled on it. Walla! The trunk lid popped open - sure glad I mounted that spring over the latch bolt.

When I looked for the key inside, I discovered I had accidentally dropped it into my upside down helmet when I placed it in the trunk.

I am now convinced that there are those who have locked their key in the Spyder trunk and there are those who will lock their key in the Spyder trunk. I never thought it would happen to me. :opps:

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to those who posted about getting into the trunk, after locking the key inside. Those small desert highways are very lonely when you think you are stuck.

Needless to say, I have not installed the spring, That is on my to do list, and after reading your issue, it is now # 1 on the to do list.

I'am 76 going on 90 and I know what you mean. We all have senior moments.:joke:

What desert highway were you on? I live in the desert of SouCal.

Hey what do you know
That makes up for any embarrasament I felt when I posted that:D
I did the same thing you did, dropped the key while I was putting my helmet in trunk. Iwas at palm springs casino so no fear of getting getting stranded anything but just a hassle.
I am only 43 but lapse of memory is kicking in here and there or could be just adult ADD.:p

I am thinking about purchasing an extra key and then hiding it somewhere on the Spyder for just such an emergency!

i gotta do that thing with cable to unlock the trunk by pulling on it like some have done already. i like the idea of being able to open the trunk without the key.

After an incident you may have read here, that cost me a four hour trip for the spare key, I fabricated an emergency trunk release, since I couldn't manage to get the cable to set the trunk lid free, even with my popper spring. The half hour and few dollars worth of materials it took to rig it up are well worth it for peace of mind alone. Either Nancy or I can open it readily, now that it is installed and we know the secret location. No fishing around blindly under the console, either.

I agree. Installing a secret emergency cable release let's even the less than mechanically inclined people feel like McGiver.

Better yet...KEEP THE KEY IN THE IGNITION WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR TRUNK...there is no need to remove it when you're fiddling around there...

I always leave the key in...

I also put the spring on...that is a MUST...works so much better and it costs about 1.75 to do it...

Get a 155 spring...

In Nancy's little incident, it was actually the spring that caused the commotion. We were at a hotrod party, with everyone admiring everyone else's rides. She left the trunk unlocked, just resting on the spring, because so many people wanted to see the trunk. She forgot she put the key in her jacket pocket, and stuck that in the trunk, too. Somewhere along the line, somebody took a peek, dropped the lid, it latched, and the saga began. I did earn plenty of brownie points for riding home to fetch the key, and riding the Spyder home four hours later in the rain in the dark of night. More points when I fabricated the trunk release. Everybody screws up sooner or later, like Trikester said..."those that have, and those that will." I'd advise everybody to carry a spare, learn the back door, or make an emergency release.

I thought I had posted on this before, but I can't find it. After several people locked their keys in the trunk, I too made and emergency truck release. It is just a piece of stainless steel fishing leader. I wrapped it around the latch and ran it back under the left lower panel (oil check panel). I remove that panel and one tug on the wire gets me into the trunk. So far I have only had to use it once. I was sure glad it was there. A cheap easy mod that only takes a few minutes and almost no mechanical skill to accomplish. Ryde Safe and Enjoy:thumbup:

What desert highway were you on? I live in the desert of SouCal.

I was on San Diego County highway S-2 (Anza-Borrego Desert). I have property and a cabin in Canebrake, also on S-2, but 25 long, lonely, miles from where I locked the key in the trunk. :( The buzzards would have been circling soon.

All's well that ends well.

Thanks everybody for your good postings. I'm going to consider that hidden emergency release cable idea.

BTW - I'm sure glad that BRP didn't clamp the end of the cable housing or pulling on it wouldn't have released the latch.

We are not actually pulling on the cable directly but pulling on the housing pulls it back and ultimately then pulls the cable itself which releases the latch. :2thumbs:

A word to the wise: Check it out before you need to use it. My hindsight is still 20/20.
