GPS - planning a route and unloading to Garmin 559

The Garmin 559 came with my 2015 RT. My question is how does one plan a route on a PC and upload it to the Garmin 559?

Garmin provides two pieces of software to help you out with that. First off is to install Garmin Express on your PC. It will help you with file transfers and also updating your GPS. The planning piece is called Base Camp. IIRC there are some videos out to show you basic operations for setting up your routes on Base Camp and sending them to your device. If your GPS is set up correctly you can also download your tracks (the actual routes you traveled) from your GPS to your PC. I know on the 660 it is a limited number of days that the tracks are stored, so if it is important to you, download them before they go away.

Thanks for the help and ideas.
i have to contact Garmin about my 559. Twice how I entered an address for a planned route and the verbal direction said turn right and the map had the high lighted road turning left.
I first time I thought it was a fluke but it happened again today. So, there is a problem with the gps.

Basecamp really sucks. The HD program seems like it might be better, I'd like to explore that option myself. Thanks Paladin.

:agree: HD ride planner works great! You can click on the route that it plans for you, then click on the road and drag your route to any road you desire to ride on. This lets you totally customize your route to your liking.

The Harley program is nothing more than Google Maps with add ons to pick hotels, dealers etc.

I must be missing something on Google Maps then, where is the one click option the the HD ride planner has to transfer your planned ride to your GPS? If it is there please let me know so I can use it.

You are correct, the Harley Ride Planner is best if you need one click to load into your GPS.

Has anyone attempted with success to use this program and upload a route into a phone or other non true GPS device with success?

Bummer, I was hoping that Google maps had it.

I have not tried to a phone, but I have downloaded the GPX file a non Garmin GPS and it works fine.
What file format are you using to get them into your phone?

I think you are all talking about the 590 not the 559 unless they have come out with a new model.

Most true GPS devices use .GPX format, so it is pretty common to have a route work in many brands of devices.

I just opened the saved routes from what I had planned recently. The file format to phone is .KMZ.

The phone will not accept a .GPX and the GPS device will not directly accept a .KML or .KMZ.

We had a pretty detailed discussion about this on Facebook recently. It was decide this shortcoming in how the data is read is a serious problem unless you understand how it all works. Maybe someday, there will be an easier means to upload onto any device but currently there is not one I know of.

Thanks, good to know. I will do some research on it. I do see some GPX to KML converter programs out there, but don't know if they will work until I try it. Sounds like a good rainy day project for me.

I use the free version of TYRE To Travel maps. It allows me to choose the exact route I want, with as many waypoints or POI's that I want. It also lets you choose your mode of travel, and a few other preferences and avoidances. Then you simply "send" it to your Garmin. I use a simple car Garmin, a Nuvi 1450, and it works great. For some reason it's not popular here on Spyder Lovers, but it's popular among other bike forums.
