In hopes of getting some meat into our discussions which, according to some, have been going down the tubes lately...I wish you to consider...

Labor Day is rapidly approaching. The last of the summer season final cookout bash will soon be upon us. One of the items that are served at these picnics as well as many State Fairs is the lowly hot dog.

I have developed my opinion on the question to follow, but do not want to cloud this thread with unnecessary facts.

What is the proper condiment, if any, to properly dress and present the hot dog? Explain if you have the urge. :roflblack::roflblack:

Because that is the only way to enjoy a hot dog.

Yes Bob, good Brats. I'm talking the good imports from Germany. The white ones. If I can't get them, Johnsonville will work. I boil mine in beer then finish them on the grill.

Now as to the OPs question. Down here in the south a hot dog is served all the way unless specified otherwise. That includes mustard, onions, chili, slaw. Most hot dogs here are Bright Leaf. They are a red dog. I don't mind them, wife doesn't like them. I prefer an all beef dog such as Ball Park. I will never tolerate Ketchup on my hot dogs.

To add anything else is to ruin the perfect hot dog... now if its just a dog...mustard and mayo...then the other stuff like relish, onions, chili, cheese...etc

Only one proponent of ketchup. I am still open to that and know people who like it.

How about brands? I have heard Nathan's, and Costco. Anyone like Hebrew National? We tried those once.

How about styles? Chicago style and the various ingredients for the "garden?" Arizona style?

Regardless, I am getting a bit hungry for you know what.

Maybe you can shed some light on why not ketchup? I may have a hot dog once a month, and may or may not have ketchup; usually I have mustard. After reading some of the posts, it seems that hot dogs may be a delicacy to some; not that there is anything wrong with that. But, do you use ketchup for other foods?

Bob Denman

:dontknow: Why not Ketchup? :dontknow:
I'll put anything on a Hot Dog, that'll get them served to me on a regular basis... nojoke

"Chilly" again tonight for supper!
The dogs can wait for later on in the week! :D
This might be the best batch that she's ever made.
Ground beef, Black beans, (Okay; we're NOT traditionalists), tomato paste, stewed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, fresh chopped tomatoes... :D, mushrooms, onions, corn, A-1 sauce...
Cayenne, jalapeno, chipotle, and horseradish!
It's got a little bit of bite to it! :2thumbs:

I did chili on Sunday. It was a chilly day here. Crisp, fall and in the low 50's. Snow (termination dust) was on the high mountaintops.

Two meats, three beans, two tomato types, three pepper types, onions, celery, lots of seasonings including oregano, fennel and...

Now I am thinking...leftover chili on some brats....
