My 2008 GS has 21,000km 13,000 mi and noticed something bad today. Rode it down too the stealer ship and at that point he strongly suggested do not ride it till replaced. He even had a tech come look and he said the same. Told me they only seen a crack in the belt like this once, it's usually teeth that are missing not a crack all the way around. That's not nice. It's hard to imagine how a crack like that could develop.

He said they suspect a rock did it, not like I off road with it but have been down few short gravel roads. Funny they just called $646.86 come pick it up :opps:

Seven years and only 13,000 miles. Is age a possible factor? Drying of the belt over time? I might vote for that.

Time to replace for sure. RE: Mileage--we have heard between 50 to 100 thousand miles. I have replaced two belts due to rocks causing breakage. Each time the price was about $350 US Funds. Not including tow.

Bob Im not sure about the sprockets, but guessing ok or that woulda been suggested as soon as belt was off. Jay your prob correct on the mileage I bought it Just over 2 years ago and there was only 4200km/2600mi wasn't used much but I have certainly used it cause its usually parked by October and back on road come March or April. D

That sure is one heck of a bill. Now not everyone feels confident in doing a job like that themselves, but last winter I found a rock(?) had punched a hole in the belt of my '08 GS. Bought a new one on ebay for $130 & did it myself. It was fiddly getting the tension & alignment right but I'm happy with the results & the savings.

Hope you have no more nasty surprises this riding season.

is the roadster subject to the extream weather changes..?? high heat then freezing cold.. Cause unless you picked up a fair sized pebble and it stayed in for awhile I don't see the belt cracking like that. Bummer but that is about the going rate in many shops. You can beat the dealer on the parts but unless you can do the labor your stuck with them...:banghead:

Just curious,would the extended warranty have covered that? Trying to decide whether to get it when I pull the trigger.

I am not an expert on the warranties but a 2008 seems a bit long in the tooth to still be covered by any warranty.

Belt failure, yes...rock or other road debris you pick up causing belt failure, no. No longer a sterile enviroment once you hit the road.

I had a belt replaced under warranty on my 2010 but I have also heard of others who had to pay. Sometimes it boils down to whether or not your dealer tries to submit the claim.

The warranty covers Manufacturing Defects only. Not normal wear or road hazards. So it all comes down to "who can prove what?"

Not surprising but thinking there was a vibration being caused by the bad belt, sure seems smother at hiway speed now D

I am a little suprised the belt tension roller wasn't originally included and isn't a permanent addition from factory, no belt tension to worry about until worn and settles the belt down.
