View Full Version : How fast have you been on your Spyder? 104mph (by my Zumo 450) is my fastest..

And, that was fast! Thursday I was out in great weather (48-54 degrees), and clocked in about 160 miles. I decided to get on I-40 and head toward Nashville for awhile. I was crusing about 74mph (70mph zone) in the right lane. And, on my left came a BMW 740 sedan. So; I decided to follow him for a bit. He opened it up... And, I just followed for a mile or so. I just rolled the throttle... And, you know how these Spyders are. Anything above about 4,600 rpms, and you're in the power band. He was still running over 105mph when I backed off. That was a good rush!

At 100mph and 7000rpm with a lot left. It was a rush of the second kind.
Then 105mph and 7300rpm chicken out after that.

Isn't the bike capped at 120 or something like that? I see some got it to 130? How is this possible?

My BMW is capped at 122...and it really does shut down at 122...until you get a little over 100 again...

I'd assume it's the same with the Spyder...if it's limited, it should be limited...

The Spyder limit that was mentioned so often by BRP was apparently an attempt by their PR folks to discourage us. Probably had quite the opposite effect. It has been widely reported that the stated 115 mph limit was pure fiction. Surprised at an actual limit on the Beemer. What year and model? Maybe it is a good thing I have a police bike, with higher gearing and no such limit. I have seen more. Then again, I have no need for anything that fast, I seldom venture more than 5 mph above the speed limit. I may have a competition driver's license, but I doubt many of those other idiots out there do, and I-94 ain't no race track!

109 mph here and then ran out of road and also a bit concerned if there might be and officer in the area. I would have loved to have pushed it faster. If I ever get the opportunity to get in a wide open straight track I will jump on it.

Greg H.

I doubt, I'll be going into triple digits again. Like Scotty, I'm seldom more than 5mph over the speed limit. But, opportunity did present itself when the 740 blew by me. :) No sooner did I tap 104, I was under 100 and settling in with the other traffic. And, sometimes that might mean 80+ in the right lane.

Getting into that speed zone, a few things enter my mind. Mainly; a tire blowing. Then, of course, getting a ticket. That's why when I'm running higher than 5mph over the limit, I'm behind a vehicle going faster.

:agree:However, sometimes I think the :spyder:has a mind of it's own!:D

On the ride to Homecoming we got stuck in traffic getting on the 4 lane in Plattsburg. Spydy wanted to get back in the pack up front. s we caught up to everyone, I happened to look down and she was going 101! Took all I had to whoa her down to a more respectable 80 to keep pace with the law abiding leaders!nojoke
If I remember correctly, there was a Spyder pulling a trailer in that group. Could have been a mirage I suppose.

The problem with the spyder and it's gearing is that it's fairly difficult to judge it's speed without actually looking at the speedo. When traveling at the higher speeds we tend to keep our attention on the road ahead. I often find myself thinking I'm doing 70mph when I'm actually doing 85mph.

Also, what Greg H said above is true. Most speedos are calibrated to show 4 - 7mph more than actual. It's a safety thing.

For most vehicles, it is actually an engineering issue. The speedos are usually calibrated to the diameter of the largest available factory tire/wheel combination. In some cases this is a larger tire than the owner actually selected as an option. The other problem is that they use the tire diameter as stated, or measured without load. The rolling diameter is smaller. The bottom of the tire is depressed by the load, so the "flat spot" rolling on the ground is closer to the center, creating an effectively smaller diameter. For a 24" diameter motorcycle tire, depressed one half inch, there is a 4% difference in the circumference, so the speedo will read 4% higher than the indicated speed, just from the loading of the tires.

If this is the case, it makes sense why when I pass all the radar sites on base, it shows me going slower than the speedometer. I have gotten mine to about 120 mph (?) before I ran out of road. Speedo showed 125. Still can't believe how smooth it was at that speed. :2thumbs:

Greg H.
01-04-2009, 01:38 PM
My GPS indicated 104mph. That's what I glanced at. I imagine the Spyder Speedo was showing about 108-110mph.

It's the same as in my Nissan Frontier, for the most part. My Escort Passport 9500i Radar Detector has GPS built in. When I'm going 70mph shown by the Frontier's speedo, The Passport 9500i is indicating about 67mph. And, comparing the Nissan speedometer to the Spyder's is about the same.

The GPS is more true to the actual speed.

NancysToy

I suppose most of us should be thankful for only a 4-6 mph difference at speed. Almost all BMW speedos are notoriously optimistic. The average is about 12% higher than the actual speed. My former CHP bike is an exception, with a certified speedometer, which is right on the button according to radar. If they can do that on purpose, why can't they all be that way? I realize they can't account for individual inflation pressures, tire changes, and other things, but they can come a lot closer than what they do. Meanwhile, we won't worry much about doing 5 mph over, will we, since we are more likely right near the speed limit. :D

Are you sure about the BMW being caped at 122, several years ago I had an 02 K1200RS and my GPS had showed 141mph, I was on a straight stretch near Harriman, TN on HY 40, I had worked it up over several trips getting a little higher each time, and it still had throttle left.
Now I have an 06 K1200S but have only had it up to 120, I think somewhere along the way I decided that it wasn't prudent to see what it could do and dialed it back, I'm not interested in going over 100 on my Spyder

I haven't hit the limit on the Spyder, but I know they made it about 120...therefore, those out there saying they hit 130 cannot do so unless they altered the electronic speed limiter...and I doubt anyone has done that...yet...

Past discussions in these forums seemed to support that there is not a speed governor on the Spyder. The max speed is more a function of your max rpm minus the wind and rolling resistance. More than one person has claimed a top end on their Spyder of over 130. I would think that if there was a governor, we would have at least 4 or 5 reports of people saying that they were accelerating and then hit the governed speed with that governed speed being a consistent number. I haven't seen that yet.
Being I value my life http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Transports/ambulance-041.gif and my money http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Transports/police-035.gif more than a speed thrill, I'll probably never see triple digits on my speedometer. :D

OK, here's some fuel for the fire. The Car and Driver road test states top speed on the Spyder is 110 MPH that is drag limited.
Does that mean that because of the aerodynamics of the vehicle that it
can only go 110??? :dontknow:

Speedo says 200 because it is an analog speedometer that is digitally driven. That means when you switch to metric units, it reads correctly on the exact same scale, no need for two sets of numbers. Equivalent to 200 kph is 124 mph. If you want to see the needle in the top of the scale, you will have to switch to metric units.

we are getting close but will never say it or admit to it online a guy in CT just got busted beacause his friend filmed them with cell phone doing 125 on I84 and posting it on myspace it made the news and everything and also has to go to court and face suspension so be carefull :doorag:

Sure, well...

RoadDog, everybody knows we weren't talking 'miles per hour' here...must've pressed that there button to switch the speedo over to, uh, kiloparsecs per nanolightyear...

or maybe leagues per femtometer.

You know, whichever one is...um...more legal-ish like. :joke:

113 mph as read by Gps. Going up hill at 3000 feet with more throttle left but I ran out of cojones.
