View Full Version : Help!!! Stranded in Key West with a new 2015 Limited Spyder.

Have 3024 miles on our new Spyder RT which we purchased in Tucson Az. at the end of Jan. My engine lite started flashing and the bike is in limp mode. The closest dealer in south of Miami over 110 mi. away. Called the dealer and he stated the bike needs service already? Can I ride the bike in limp mode with out causing damage. It has been very hot in the sun, and the computers maybe screwed up. Checked the oil, trans, and brake fluid. All seem ok. Can you help????

Yes, you can drive it in limp mode, but speed and RPM will be limited (you should be able to get up to just under 60 MPH). Try doing the "key walk"...shut off the bike, remove the key, and walk away from it for a while. Try it again and see what happens, it may reset. What were you doing when the light came on?

PS - Of all the possible places to be "stranded", you picked the best possible one!

Went to Kmart and had the bike in sun (90 degrees) and started the bike, lite started flashing, and we drove to the RV Park. Been on the phone ever since.

Are you someplace safe??

if so turn the bike off, remove the key and walk a few feet away from the bike, this will allow the computer to shut down, after a few minutes 2 or 3 go back and see if the bike will start properly, sometimes the computer needs a reboot.

P0340...is crankshaft position sensor reporting issue. If the key walk dosen't clear things up this sensor needs to be checked. Could be loose or damaged. Not common especially on your model. If engine runs you can ryde back to miami slowly...:gaah:

shut her down, walked away, removed the key. Got codes per Nancystoys and all things seem fine except the engine lite still flashes and the limp mode lite comes on.

AAA Plus RV/Motorcycle?

Should have free towing under the warranty.

There is a number in the manual/towing sheet to call. (as I recall from my resent purchase)

Hope all is well for you soon !:spyder2:

Unless roadside assistance has changed, you get up to $200 per incident for towing.

MRH
04-20-2015, 07:33 PM
That $200 should cover the last ten miles if you have 100 miles of AAA towing for motorcycles and RV's. I also have a Good Sam card, as that tows you to the nearest place that is "willing and able" to fix your Spyder, no matter how many miles it is.

Towing was $10 a mile on a flatbed when I asked, so hopefully you have towing insurance.

I would call ahead to the dealer you are going to so they know to expect you and can hopefully service you quickly. Be braced if they have to order a part from Canada, and know it can take some time. Being very nice to BRP on the phone and explaining your situation goes much further with them than getting upset, or it did in my book. They may extend themselves further for you if you speak with them on the phone personally.

Is there such a thing as a dash cover for the Spyders? I wonder if even a towel would help or if the heat is also coming through the trunk or above the trunk or elsewhere...thoughts??

My AMA membership includes roadside assistance. If you have that, give them a call. I'm not sure about the towing benefit.

If limp mode still comes on after taking the key out you could try putting the key in and turning it off and on 3 times. Don't start the engine just wait for the start message then turn the key off and on 3 times. That may reset your computer. If not check for codes again. If they are still there they are active and you will need service.

Limp mode limits the rpm so you will want to up shift as soon as you can. The good thing is the speed limit isn't very high in the Jeys and it is flat there.

This is a good tip Ann. I've done this many times and it hasn't failed. I contribute it to one of the computers onboard having a brain fart. If the fault returns then you know something is definitely amiss.

Give them a bit of a chance guys... Who knows what their situation has turned into? Might have gotten the bike to Miami only to find out the part needed is a week away! I know if something like that happened to me I'd rather be stuck in the Keys and not Miami! I also would probably bury my head in the sand and not go whinging on a forum.
Hopefully we will all hear a happy ending soon

With AAA you must have the "Plus Motorcycle" coverage. Standard and plus coverage do not cover motorcycles. The motorcycle add on is about $35.00 over and above whatever other coverage you have.

If the shoe fits wear it, if not throw it away! It has been quite a while and no reply. I have seen this happen before on this site. People go to great lengths to help, spend time looking up info and never a reply from the person who is in a panic and wants immediate HELP. In my book that's Ingrate. I did not call anyone an ingrate but threw it out there for thought. Read my post again.
Mike, (BlueKnight) in a previous post said it better than I. The nature of most is very lazy. First little problem they jump on here and Holler Wolf. I Suggest reading the manual, calling BRP, call the nearest Spyder Dealer, and for God Sake remember you have a new warranty that provides towing. If you have done your own due diligence then get on here for help but after you have done the above.

Make an honest effort to educate and solve your own problems first before getting everyone to do it for you. That's not asking too much is it?
